Field Hockey Wins NorPac Opener Over California, 1-0

Oct. 6, 2001

Box Score

Stanford, Calif. - Senior Erica Swesey converted a penalty stroke with 32:15 remaining in the game to lift Stanford (5-6, 1-0 NorPac) to a key 1-0 victory over California (6-3, 3-1 NorPac) in the NorPac opener for the Cardinal on Saturday. Stanford's victory snapped California's 14-game regular season NorPac winning streak as the two-time defending regular season NorPac champions were defeated in a regular season NorPac game for the first time since 1998. The victory was Stanford's second in a row over the Golden Bears as the Cardinal also beat California in the finals of the 2000 NorPac Tournament. The victory was also the second straight overall for Stanford but came after a 22-day break for the Cardinal.

Senior goalkeeper Rebecca Shapiro played the entire game behind the net for the Cardinal to record her third shutout of the season and the 18th of her career. The Golden Bears had several chances to tie the game in the final 10 minutes but failed to get a shot past Shapiro, who finished with four saves.

Swesey, who put the winning score by California goalkeeper Emily Rowen, was granted a penalty shot after Stanford's Amanda Billmeyer was fouled near the Golden Bear goal.

California outshot Stanford, 12-11, in an evenly matched game as both teams had three penalty corners.

Stanford will next be in action when the Cardinal hosts Pacific in a NorPac game on Sunday, October 14 (1:00 p.m.).
