California Defeats Field Hockey, 2-0, In NorPac Championship Game

Boone, N.C. - No. 17 California (12-4) captured the NorPac Tournament championship with a 2-0 victory over No. 20 Stanford (11-8) in the finals of the NorPac Tournament at Kidd Brewer Stadium on Saturday. The Golden Bears will next host an NCAA Play-In Game versus Quinnipiac on Tuesday, November 6 (11:00 a.m.). The Cardinal finishes the season with an 11-8 record, winning eight of its last 10 contests. Stanford was denied in its attempt for a second straight NorPac Tourney title.

Lisa D'Anjou gave California the only goal the Golden Bears would need, scoring unassisted with 19:40 remaining in the first half. Maggie Grimes added an unassisted insurance goal with 5:27 to go in the contest.

Stanford had several scoring opportunities with seven penalty corners, including six in the first half. California held a 6-4 advantage in shots.

Stanford and California had split their two contests in the regular season this year with each team winning on its home turf. The two teams tied for the regular season NorPac West Division title with identical 5-1 league records.

California goalkeeper Emily Rowlen stopped three Stanford shots, while Cardinal goalkeeper Rebecca Shapiro picked up one save.

Five Stanford seniors -- Sara Herman, Melita Sawyer, Shapiro, Melissa Stai and Erica Swesey -- concluded their collegiate careers on Saturday.
