Men's Crew Continues Strong Fall Showing At The Newport Fall Regatta.

Nov. 5, 2001

Newport Beach, Calif. - The Cardinal took their first road trip of the season to Newport Beach, CA. The weather on the weekend was unusual, as the team found overcast skies and intermittent rain. However, the damp conditions did not deter the Cardinal's enthusiasm for top-flight competition from the likes of three-time defending National Champions, the University of California at Berkeley.

On Sunday, the racing started off with the Open 8+ event. The Stanford Varsity 8+ started second between two scholarship-laden California eights. The racing was adventurous but decidedly in the Bears' favor as Cal's first boat maintained a twenty-second lead with less than a mile to go in the race. At this point, the Cal eight struck a buoy, heavily damaging a rigger and limped home with seven rowers. The hard charging Cardinal eight managed to cut the margin to five seconds at the finish line.

In the Freshmen Eight event, the Cardinal eight walked to a 31-second margin of victory over its nearest competitors. It was a very impressive showing for the young Cardinal oarsmen. This marked the first time that the Stanford Freshmen had won the Newport Fall Regatta. Frosh Coach Jon Allbin was extremely pleased with the results and commented: "The daily effort and joy that the athletes have gathered from each stroke of committed work comprise the base for Stanford's foundation. They are the future of Stanford Crew."
