STANFORD, Calif. - Led by Lindsey Yamasaki's 22 points and Cori Enghusen's double-double of 14 points and 15 rebounds, the No. 9 Stanford University women's basketball team defeated KSC Szekszard of Hungary 106-59 to open its exhibition season Wednesday night at Maples Pavilion.
Stanford had five Cardinal score in double-figures and 12 athletes played more than 16 minutes.
"They were excited to play tonight," said head coach Tara VanDerveer. "We were able to play a lot of people and try some different combinations."
The Cardinal took a 58-26 lead going into halftime, led by a 19-point first half effort by Yamasaki in only 11 minutes of play. Hungary scored the game's first basket to take a 2-0 lead, but the Cardinal quickly knotted the score on a Sebnem Kimyacioglu jumper and never looked back. Stanford used a 17-0 run in the middle of the first half on three consecutive lay-ups by Enghusen. The Cardinal then took its biggest lead right before halftime on a T'Nae Thiel lay-up.
Stanford got off to a quick start in the second half and jumped out to a 73-28 lead when Thiel hit both free throws with 15 minutes remaining. Hungary went on a short run to cut the score to 75-44, but consecutive jumpers by Kelley Suminski got the Cardinal rolling.
Both teams exchanged points and then the Cardinal took over again. Suminski's driving lay-up gave Stanford its largest lead with one minute remaining, 101-54.
"Everyone worked really hard tonight. We now need to take these things and build on them," said VanDerveer.
Yamasaki finished with a game-high 22 points and four assists. Enghusen had the game's only double-double and added five blocks. Suminski chipped in 20 points in her collegiate debut, while Kimyacioglu and Thiel each recorded 12 points. Nicole Powell dished out seven assists and three steals.
Eva Stotkovich and Tudit Szelesy led KSC Szekszard with 11 points apiece.
Stanford completes its exhibition season on Sunday when it hosts Love & Basketball at 4:00 p.m. at Maples Pavilion.
