No. 2 Women's Soccer Ends In 1-1 Tie With USC

Stanford, Calif. - After 120 minutes of play, the No. 2 Stanford women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie against USC on Friday night in front of 1,093 fans at Maloney Field. The Cardinal stand at 13-2-2 overall (6-1-1 Pac-10) and will face No. 3 UCLA on Sunday for the conference title.

USC struck first on an unassisted goal from Megan Abbamonto at 16:23, giving the Trojans a 1-0 lead. USC tallied the first two shots of the game, but the Cardinal came back to fire 10 unanswered.

Stanford tied the game just minutes in the second half at 46:48 on Marcie Ward's (Alamo, CA) 10th goal of the season. Ward received the pass from Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) and faked the USC keeper, firing the ball into the back of the net.

Both teams had chances with each team recording seven shots in the second 45 minutes, but neither could connect. After 90 minutes of play the game remained tied at 1-1, with the Cardinal outshooting USC 12-9.

In the first overtime, Stanford nearly scored at 91:23 when Becky Myers ' (St. Charles, IL) shot sailed wide of the goal. Myers set up a corner kick which was taken by Ward, and again the Cardinal were not able to find the back of the net when a Callie Withers (Los Altos Hills, CA) header landed just high.

The Cardinal still pressured the USC defense in the second overtime, getting four corner kick opportunities. Stanford has its chances but just could not put in the game-winner, ending the 120-minute match at 1-1.

For the match, Stanford outshot the Trojans 18-10 and also managed 14 corner kicks. Ward also recorded a game-high six shots, while Myers tallied four. Goalkeeper Carrie Walsh (Los Gatos, CA) had five saves, four coming in the second half.

Stanford will play its final regular home season game against No. 3 UCLA on Sunday at 1 p.m. The winner of the match will be the 2001 Pac-10 women's soccer champion.
