Stanford, Calif. - A late goal by No. 3 UCLA at 73:28 gave the Bruins the 1-0 victory over No. 4 Stanford this afternoon at Maloney Field. The Cardinal end their regular season at 13-2-2 overall (6-2-1 Pac-10), and will find out their postseason status tomorrow afternoon when the NCAA announces its tournament parings.
Both teams were evenly matched throughout the first 45 minutes of play, with UCLA registering seven shots to the Cardinal's six. Stanford did get an early scoring opportunity in the third minute, but Marcie Ward's (Alamo, CA) and Marcia Wallis ' (Los Gatos, CA) shots were both saved by the Bruin goalkeeper.
The Cardinal got another scoring chance right before halftime off a corner kick. Amy Sauer (Spring, TX) fired a shot that was blocked by a defender and Christy LaPierre (Gold River, CA) followed with shot that sailed just wide of the goal.
UCLA had opportunities as well, but the Stanford defense held on with four saves by Carrie Walsh (Los Gatos, CA) in the first half.
The Bruins came out of halftime pressuring the Cardinal defense and at 73:28 Staci Duncan took the ball from the Stanford defender and fired a shot from the box giving UCLA the 1-0 lead.
Stanford had chances to tie, but could not find the back of the net before time expired. The loss gave UCLA the Pac-10 title as they improve to 17-2-0 (8-1-0 Pac-10).
UCLA outshot Stanford 13-11. Ward fired four shots for the Cardinal and Walsh recorded seven saves in goal. The game also honored seniors LaPierre, Sauer and Walsh as they played in their final regular season home game on Maloney Field.
