Stanford, Calif. - Stanford junior forward Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) scored two goals in the first 11 minutes of the game as the Cardinal women's soccer team went on to a 3-1 win over Saint Mary's in a second round game of the 2001 NCAA Women's College Cup on Sunday afternoon at Maloney Field.
The fifth-seeded Cardinal is now 15-3-2 overall and advances to third round of the College Cup to face Texas A&M, a 2-1 overtime winner over SMU. This game will take place at Stanford's Maloney Field at 7:30 p.m., PT on Friday, November 23rd. The Gaels finish their season with a 15-3-2 record.
Stanford wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Less than two minutes into the game, Becky Myers (St. Charles, IL) sent a cross from the right side to the near post. Gael keeper Ruth Montgomery got her hands on the ball, but Wallis was right there when the ball popped out for the score and a 1-0 lead just 1:09 into the game.
Ten minutes later, Wallis struck again. This time, it was Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) with the assist. Ward's cross from the left side was again touched by the Saint Mary's keeper, but Wallis was positioned for the deflection and gave the Cardinal a 2-0 lead at the 10:20 mark.
Sarah Takekawa pulled the Gaels within one goal with her score in the 31st minute. Lucianne Crenshaw beat her defender down the right side and sent a cross to the center. Takekawa collected the ball and sent a shot to the lower left corner for the Gaels' only score.
The Cardinal added an insurance goal in the 87th minute. Natalie Sanderson (Ventura, CA) crossed the ball from the right corner to a wide-open Kelsey Carlson (Citrus Heights, CA) in the center of the box. Carlson settled the ball and fired a shot to the lower right corner for a 3-1 Stanford lead.
In the net for Stanford, Carrie Walsh (Los Gatos, CA) recorded four saves. The Cardinal outshot the Gaels 12-7 in the game.
This is the farthest Stanford has advanced in the College Cup since 1994 when it made an appearance in the quarterfinals. In 1994, the field consisted of just 48 teams as opposed to the 64 teams this year.
The third round game between Stanford and Texas A&M will be the second meeting of the year between the two teams. The Cardinal handed the Aggies a 4-2 defeat in the second game of the season in Texas.
