Stanford, Calif. - Anthony Chimienti's unassisted goal in the 133rd minute gave Santa Clara a 1-0 win over California in triple overtime in a first round game of the 2001 NCAA Men's College Cup Friday night at Stanford's Maloney Field.

The Broncos, the West Coast Conference champs, improve to 12-8-0 overall and advance to Sunday's second round game against third-seeded Stanford, which had a first-round bye. The Golden Bears end their season with a 10-9-1 record.

Both teams had numerous scoring opportunities late in regulation as well as in overtime. But it was Santa Clara's leading scorer, Chimienti, who provided the game's only score with two minutes left in the third overtime period. Chimienti followed up on a rebound and drilled a shot to the lower right corner of the goal.

Eight minutes into the first overtime period, Chimienti missed a shot on an open goal after he beat Cal keeper Josh Saunders. The Broncos outshot the Bears 13-2 in the three overtime periods.

Cal had two solid chances to score late in the game, the best coming with :10 seconds remaining in regulation. Austin Ripmaster found himself in a one-on-one situation with Santa Clara keeper Steve Cronin about 35 yards out. Ripmaster tapped it by Cronin, but his shot on the open net sailed just high of the goal.

Ripmaster had another opportunity with four minutes to go in regulation. Chris Roner fed Ripmaster with a through ball for a one-on-one with the keeper, but Cronin came up with the save.

In the net, Cronin had four saves for the Broncos while Saunders had seven for Cal.

The Bears held a 12-3 shot advantage at the end of regulation.

This was the second meeting between the two teams. The Bears won the first meeting 1-0 in overtime on Oct. 7.
