Stanford, Calif. - Texas A&M's Adrienne Dillard headed in a corner kick as the Aggies upset fifth-seeded Stanford 1-0 in a third round game of the 2001 NCAA Women's College Cup on Friday night at Maloney Field.
The Aggies improve to 17-3-1 and advance to the quarterfinals against the winner of Saturday's Portland-Nebraska game. The Cardinal end the season at 15-4-2.
"It was a great display for soccer tonight," said head coach Andy Nelson. "Both teams played tremendous. We enjoyed being a part of it, but wished we could have come out on the better end. We played every well and created great chances, but it was one of those nights that the ball would not go in for us."
After a scoreless first half, the Aggies got on the scoreboard with the game's lone goal in the 62nd minute. A corner kick from Amber Childers was sent into the center of the box and Dillard's header proved to be the game-winner.
The Cardinal came back strong with several shots in the next 10 minutes. Natalie Sanderson (Ventura, CA) had a shot hit the crossbar and Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) was stopped in a one-on-one by Aggie keeper Esther Thompson. Stanford had six corner kicks in the second half and eight for the game.
The Cardinal outshot the Aggies 12-6 in the game, including a 6-2 advantage in the first half. Callie Withers (Los Altos Hills, CA) lead Stanford with three shots. In the net, Stanford's Carrie Walsh (Los Gatos, CA) had two saves while Thompson had four for Texas A&M.
