Corvallis, Ore. - Led by Logan Tom's 23 kills, the third-ranked Stanford Cardinal swept the Oregon State Beavers 3-0 to win its seventh consecutive match on Saturday night in Corvallis. Games scores were 30-23, 30-22, 35-33. The Cardinal stand at 21-2 overall and 12-1 Pac-10, while the Beavers drop to 15-7 (8-5 Pac-10).
In the first game Stanford built a 14-11 lead on a block from Ogonna Nnamani and Sara McGee, but Cardinal miscues allowed Oregon State to go up 15-14. Following a timeout, the Cardinal pulled away with a 20-15 advantage on the strong serving arm of Ashley Ivy. Ivy registered three service aces in game one alone. Kills from Logan Tom, McGee and Nnamani put Stanford up 24-16. After exchanging points to be at 28-23, the Cardinal won the final two points of the game on an ace by Tara Conrad and a Nnamani block to win 30-23. Tom tallied five kills and eight digs for Stanford in the first game.
The Cardinal jumped out to a 10-4 lead on two kills from Sara McGee, one from Ogonna Nnamani and an ace from Ashley Ivy. Two kills each from Logan Tom and Nnamani allowed Stanford to go up 19-10, but Oregon State came back to get within 22-18. A kill by Tom ended the Beavers four-point run, and Oregon State never got closer. The Cardinal took game two on kills from Nnamani, Tom and Ivy, giving Stanford the 30-22 victory. Solid hitting was the story in the second game, with the Cardinal hitting a .486 clip.
Oregon State did not quit despite being down 2-0, and gave the Cardinal all they could handle in the third game. With the score tied 7-7, Stanford took a 13-8 lead behind Sara McGee's kills and another ace serve by Ashley Ivy. The Beavers fought back to tie the game at 15-15, when both teams started exchanging points and neither team was able to take a commanding lead. After long rallied that saw some amazing defensive plays, the Cardinal found themselves down 21-24. Logan Tom kept Stanford in the game with four kills and two service aces. With the score tied at 29-29 a Cardinal hitting error gave Oregon State a game point opportunity, but Sara McGee came up with a huge block tying the game at 30-30. Stanford then had three chances at match point and finally converted on the fourth try. A Beaver hitting error gave the Cardinal a 34-33 lead and a Tom kill gave Stanford its 21st victory of the year.
Stanford was led by junior Logan Tom's 23 kills, who hit at a .432 hitting percentage, 18 digs and four service aces. Freshman Ogonna Nnamani recorded 15 kills and sophomore Anna Robinson dished out 40 assists. Junior Ashley Ivy tallied a career-high six service aces, tying her fifth all-time for aces in a single match with former Cardinal Lisa Sharpley and Kerri Walsh.
Oregon State was led by Gina Schmidt's team-high 12 kills, while Nikki Neuburger added 11 digs. Beaver setter Laura Collins recorded 42 assists.
Stanford will return to Maples for its final home Pac-10 weekend. The Cardinal will take on No. 8 UCLA on Friday, Nov. 9 and fifth-ranked USC on Saturday, Nov. 10. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
