Tucson, Ariz. - After an overtime loss to Arizona State on Friday night, the No. 2 Stanford women's soccer team rebounded with a 5-0 victory over Arizona on Sunday afternoon at Murphey Stadium. Freshman Katie Wayland (Concord, MA) scored two goals for the Cardinal as they moved to 13-2-1 on the year and 6-1 in the Pac-10.
Stanford got on the board first at 36:30, on a goal from Robyn deHay (Aiea, HI). For deHay it was her first score of the season, with the assist credited to Brittany Oliveira (Los Angeles, CA) on a perfect serve that allowed deHay to head the ball in. Three minutes later, the Cardinal struck again on another header. Wayland scored her first collegiate goal at 39:15 off a cross from Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA).
The Cardinal went into half time with a 2-0 lead and fired 11 shots in the first half to the Wildcats' four.
Having scored her first goal earlier in the match, Wayland added her second career goal at 65:08 to put the Cardinal up 3-0. Wayland fired a shot from 15 yards out that was dropped by the Arizona keeper, finding the back of the net.
Ward tallied her ninth goal of the year at 81:48, when she controlled the ball and found herself in a breakaway situation. The ball was stopped by the keeper, but mishandled giving Stanford its fourth goal of the game. The Cardinal still kept attacking and four minutes later at 85:56, deHay served up her first collegiate assist to Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) who headed the ball into the net from five yards out, giving the Cardinal the 5-0 advantage.
Stanford outshot the Wildcats 20-6 and recorded its fifth team shutout. Carrie Walsh (Los Gatos, CA) had three saves for the Cardinal in goal.
The Cardinal will return to Maloney Field for their final regular season home weekend against top-ranked UCLA and USC. Stanford will battle USC on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and fifth-ranked UCLA on Sunday at 1 p.m.
