Stanford, Calif. --- Loyola Marymount used 11 goals in the first half to claim a 14-6 victory over Massachusetts in the consolation match of the 2001 NCAA Men's Water Polo Championships.
Evan Lutz put UMass up 1-0 at 6:20 in the first quarter, but the Lions came back to score the next six goals. LMU's Stephen Lipinski and Kyle Witt each scored two goals, while Tamas Szego and Kevin Witt both added one.
The Lions went into halftime with an 11-5 lead, with UMass' Adam Moore chalking up a score eight seconds before the break.
Both defenses picked it up in the second half allowing only four goals. Kevin Paulsen recorded six saves for Loyola, while the Minutemen's J.R. VanderWall had four in the cage. UMass came to within six on a goal from Carlos Ramos to hold the score at 12-6. The Lions then used goals by both Kyle and Kevin Witt to capture third place.
Kyle Witt led the LMU attack with four goals, followed by three scores each from Kevin Witt, Lipinski and Szego. Ramos tallied two goals for the Minutemen.
LMU concluded its season at 15-14, while UMass dropped to 28-7.
