Stanford, Calif. - Freshman outside hitter Ogonna Nnamani had a match-high 15 kills to lead the third-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team to a 3-0 win over San Jose State tonight in Maples Pavilion. Game scores were 30-25, 30-21, 30-23.
The Cardinal improve to 29-2 on the year while the Spartans end the season with a 25-8 record.
Game one remained close between the two teams. After back-to-back Ogonna Nnamani kills gave Stanford the 16-12 edge, SJSU called a timeout. Stanford then pushed the score to 20-13 but San Jose was not finished and forced a Cardinal timeout when they pulled to within four at 23-27. A kill by Sara McGee gave Stanford game point at 29-23 and Ashley Ivy's kill sealed the win for Stanford at 30-25.
The Cardinal took control early in game two building a sizeable lead at 11-5 on a kill by Logan Tom. Stanford went up 21-13 on a kill by Tara Conrad while an Ogonna Nnamani kill gave the team a 23-15 advantage. A Spartan miscue put Stanford at game point at 29-19. After back-to-back SJSU points, Sara McGee recorded a kill for the 30-21 win.
Game three was a back and forth battle with both teams trading points until the Cardinal took a three point lead at 20-17 on a Logan Tom kill. An Ashley Ivy kill put Stanford up 25-21. After trading some more points, the Cardinal finally ended the game and the match on a Tom kill at 30-23.
Stanford hit .289 for the match while San Jose State hit .154. The Cardinal outblocked the Spartans 12-6 and outdug them 52-42 on the night.
Logan Tom and Ashley Ivy contributed nine kills each while Tom tallied a match-high 19 digs. Tara Conrad and Sara McGee added five blocks each to the Cardinal cause.
With tonight's win, Stanford advances to the Sweet Sixteen where they will take on No. 13 Utah next week.
