MADISON, Wisc. - Stanford sophomore Laura Granville (Chicago, IL/The Latin School) won her 58th straight match to break the NCAA record tonight at the USTA/ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships at the University of Wisconsin's A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
Granville beat Vanderbilt's Julie Ditty 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 singles tonight to break Patty Fendick-McCain's record while at Stanford in 1986-87. Granville and top-ranked Stanford (9-0) advances to tomorrow's finals after beating No. 13 Vanderbilt (10-1) 5-1 tonight and will face Georgia in a rematch of last May's NCAA final (a 5-4 Georgia win) at 11 a.m. CT Sunday. Only three teams have ever won the USTA/ITA National Women's Team Indoor title since the tournament's inception in '88. Stanford is the defending champ and has won five titles, Georgia has won the tournament twice and Florida has won it six times. This is the first time they have met in the final. Stanford edged Georgia 4-3 in last year's semifinals en route to the title.
Granville is 23-0 this season and 70-2 in her second season of collegiate tennis. She ended her freshman season with a 35-match win streak while winning the third and fourth legs of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Grand Slam (the Rolex National Indoor and NCAA Championships). Earlier this month she repeated as champion at the Rolex National Indoor Championships. She has not lost since Jan. 14, 2000 (to UCLA's Amanda Basica) and has lost only two sets in 23 matches this season.
Granville is a native of Chicago and a 1999 graduate of The Latin School. Prior to Stanford she became the first junior since Tracy Austin to win back-to-back USTA Girls18-and-under singles titles.
Along with Granville, the Cardinal's Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge HS), Lauren Kalvaria (Indialnatic, FL/Boca Raton Prep) and Gabriela Lastra (Reno, NV/Reno HS) also posted singles victories to lead Stanford to the convincing win. The Cardinal has now outscored its opposition 19-1 in its three victories this season.
