Sept. 1, 2001

Box Score

Stanford, Calif. - Freshman Eleanor Morgan scored a pair of goals to lead Stanford (2-2) to a 3-0 victory over Fairfield (1-1) in an NCAA field hockey game on Saturday at the Varsity Field Hockey Turf. The victory was the second straight for Stanford, which knocked off #3 Michigan State on Friday.

"It's important that we have put together back-to-back wins because that gives us confidence as a team, especially with a really tough schedule coming up on the road," said Stanford head coach Sheryl Johnson. "We hope to come back from the road trip very successful."

Erica Swesey, Stanford's leading scorer last season, scored her first goal of the 2001 campaign on a beautiful reverse sweep shot with 21:37 remaining in the first half.

Morgan scored her first goal on an assist by Amanda Billmyer to give the Cardinal a 2-0 lead for a bit of breathing room with 19:44 to go in the game. Morgan added a goal when she tipped in a ball off the stick of Christina Williams with 2:50 left in the contest.

"This was the first game that I played primarily at the forward position," said Morgan, who had played mostly at midfield in her first three collegiate games. "I'm a little bit more comfortable at forward because that's what I played in high school, but I'll play any position."

Stanford goalkeeper Rebecca Shapiro posted her first shutout of the season and the 16th of her career, recording a game-high seven saves.

Stanford outshot Fairfield, 10-9.

The victory concluded a season-opening four-game homestand for the Cardinal, who will embark on a seven-game road trip from September 5-13. Stanford will face Ohio (at Louisville, KY) to open the trip next Wednesday, September 5 (4:00 p.m., CDT). The trip also includes games versus Louisville, Indiana, Iowa, Ball State, Central Michigan and Miami (Ohio).
