No. 8 Women's Gymnastics Falls To No. 15 Minnesota, 195.800-194.675

MINNEAPOLIS, Min. - No. 8 Stanford women's gymnastics dropped a close decision to No. 15 Minnesota on Saturday evening, falling 195.800-194.675 to the Golden Gophers in the 2002 season opener for the Cardinal.

The Cardinal (0-1) bested the Golden Gophers in just one event- a 48.800-48.525 edge on the vault- as Minnesota (2-0) outscored Stanford in three events.

Sophomore Caroline Fluhrer (Seattle, Wash.) finished with the top score on the vault apparatus, posting a 9.850 to pace the field. Sophomores Kendall Beck (San Antonio, Tex.) and Shelly Goldberg (Mequon, Wis.) followed in second and third place, respectively, with scores of 9.800 and 9.775. Fluhrer also led a group of six Cardinal gymnasts on the parallel bars with a score of 9.825, as Minnesota won the event by a 49.225-48.875 advantage.

On balance beam, three Cardinal gymnasts finished among the top five. Beck, sophomores Lis? L?veill? (Burnaby, British Columbia) and Lindsay Wing (Cypress, Tex.) each scored a 9.825 to finish in a three-way tie for second. Fluhrer notched the highest Stanford score on the floor exercise with a 9.850, while Wing tied for fifth place in the event with a 9.825. Fluher finished second among all performers in the All-Around category with a 39.225, while senior Katy Herbert (Chandler Heights, Ari.) was fourth with a 37.975.

The Cardinal will square off against Washington on Friday, Jan. 18, in their home opener at 7:30 p.m.
