TEMPE, Ariz. - No. 14 Stanford women's gymnastics recorded its second straight Pac-10 victory, edging Arizona State 195.775-195.450 in front of a 1,320 fans at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Ariz., on Friday evening. The win was the first on the road for the Cardinal this season, while the Sun Devils endured only their fifth regular season home loss since 1992.
Stanford (2-1) outscored Arizona State in just one event- a season-high 49.225-48.100 advantage on the balance beam- but placed in the top-3 individually in each of the other three categories.
Cardinal gymnasts occupied five of the top spots on the balance beam, which gave Stanford the decisive edge after Arizona State was held back by three falls. Lise L?veill? (Burnaby, British Columbia) was second with a 9.875 to pace Stanford, which hit six-for-six, scoring no worse than a 9.750. Sophomore Kendall Beck (San Antonio, Texas) tied for first place on the vault with a career-high 9.900 with ASU's Jada Cox, leading five other Cardinal athletes in the event en route to a team score of 48.800.
Both teams notched a 49.025 on the uneven bars, with junior Abby Gair (Manitou Spring, Col.) posting a 9.900 to tie for first place honors. Sophomore Caroline Fluhrer (Seattle, Wash.) and senior Kristin Jensen (Easton, Pa.) also finished in the top-six for the event. The Sun Devils claimed the floor exercise with a 49.250-48.725 mark, with Fluhrer leading the Card at 9.875. Fluhrer's All-Around score of 39.175 was tops on the night, with teammate Katy Herbert (Chandler Heights, Ariz.) garnering a 38.750 to place third.
The meet also marked the return of Cardinal first-year head coach Kristen Smyth to Arizona State, where she spent the prior five seasons as associate head coach. Stanford will be back at home on Friday, Feb. 1, when it squares off against Arizona at 7:30 p.m.
