Men's Gymnastics Snags Two Top-Three Finishes at Cardinal Open

Stanford, Calif. - Men's gymnastics opened competition for the 2002 season tonight, as Stanford hosted the Cardinal Open. Senior Dave Durante (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) and sophomore Dan Gill (Fairfax, VA/James Robinson) earned top-three places in the All-Around en route to a second place team finish. California topped all teams with a 211.975, while Stanford finished with 206.950. UC Santa Barbara finished with 201.300 while the high-school all-star team ended with 203.250.

Durante, who finished 17th in the All-Around at the NCAA Championships last spring, notched a 9.250 on teh pommel horse to tie for first. He also put up a 9.150 on rings to claim second and a 9.100 on vault to share second place. Durante recorded a 51.750 All-Around score, falling just shy of Cal's Cody Moore who took first with a 52.500. Gill tallied two third place finishes - an 8.500 on parallel bars and an 8.800 on the horizontal bar. He set a 51.250 mark in the All-Around to capture third place.

Senior Rico Andrade (Plymouth, MN/Wayzata) took first on the floor with a 9.100 and junior Marshall Erwin (Cincinnati, OH/Wyoming) dominated on rings with a 9.600 to claim first place.

Stanford returns to action on Feb. 8 at the Winter Cup, and will resume its home season on March 7 at 7 p.m. as the Cardinal host Temple and Arizona State.
