No. 7 Women's Gymnastics Falls Short Against UCLA, 196.925-195.025

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Sunday's meet between conference powers No. 7 Stanford and No. 11 UCLA lived up to its billing, however the Cardinal was unable to pick up the road victory against the Bruins in a 196.925-195.025 defeat on Sunday afternoon in front of 2,174 at Pauley Pavilion.

Stanford now sits at 4-2 overall, with a trip to Gainesville awaiting the squad later this weekend. UCLA, which set a season-high total with its 196.925, improves its mark to 6-4.

The Cardinal led after the first rotation, scoring a 48.875 on the uneven bars compared to UCLA's 48.725 on the vault. Senior Becky Meldrum (Mertztown, Pa.) paced the Cardinal with a 9.875 on the bars. The Bruins then jumped into the lead in the second rotation, scoring a season-best 49.525 on the bars to take the lead over the Cardinal, which was led on the vault by Caroline Fluhrer (Seattle, Wash.) with a 9.825 tally.

UCLA proceeded to win the following two events (balance beam and floor), outscoring the Cardinal 49.200-48.375 on the beam and 49.475-48.925 on the floor exercise. Sophomore Lindsay Wing (Cypress, Texas) finished in a second place tie on the beam with a 9.875, while Shelly Goldberg (Mequon, Wisc.) and Lise L?veill? (Burnaby, British Columbia) each earned a 9.875 for their efforts on the floor exercise to finish in fourth.

Bruin sophomore Jamie Dantzscher won the all-around with a career-high 39.725 and recorded her fourth consecutive perfect 10 on the floor exercise.

Stanford will travel to Gainesville on Friday for a meet with Illinois-Chicago, Penn State and host Florida slated to get underway at 4 p.m. PST.
