STANFORD, Calif. - In a rematch of last season's NCAA championship, Stanford women's water polo team came out on top Sunday afternoon in a 9-4 victory over defending national champion UCLA in the title match of the 2002 Stanford Invitational.
The Cardinal jumped out to a 3-0 lead, taking advantage of two Bruin ejections. Ellen Estes, Brenda Villa and Julie Gardner scored consecutive goals for Stanford.
Stanford held on to a 4-2 halftime lead, before Margie Dingeldein found the net to put the Cardinal up 5-2 in the third quarter. Following a Bruin goal, Stanford rattled off four additional scores (two by Villa and one each by Kate Pettit and Kelty Luber) to increase its lead to 9-3 with two minutes remaining in the contest.
The Bruins added a late goal to round out the scoring. UCLA's Amber Stachowski scored three of the Bruin's four goals on the day.
Jackie Frank recorded six saves in net for the Cardinal.
In other action, USC defeated California 7-5 to take third place in the tournament while San Jose State captured fifth place with a 6-5 win over UC Davis. UC Santa Barbara scored a 5-1 victory over Massachusetts to finish seventh.
The Cardinal will be idle next weekend and then travel to UC Santa Barbara the following weekend to participate in the Gaucho Tournament.
