STANFORD, Calif. - The 17th-ranked California Golden Bears (6-3) upset top-ranked Stanford (7-1) 4-3 on Saturday afternoon to snap a 21-match losing streak against the Cardinal that dated back to May of 1991. The loss also snapped Stanford's 75-match home winning streak that began in 1996.
The Golden Bears won the dual by capturing four of the six singles matches, including three crucial three-set victories.
At No. 1 singles, the Golden Bears' 125th-ranked John Paul Fruttero stunned top-ranked K.J. Hippensteel (Roanoke, VA/International Academy) 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. California pulled off another big upset at No. 3 as Wayne Wong upset 16th-ranked David Martin (Tulsa, OK/Boca Raton Prep) 7-6, 3-6, 6-3. Cal's third three-set singles victory came at No. 5 where Robert Kowalczyk outlasted Sam Warburg (Sacramento, CA/Jesuit HS) 4-6, 6-3, 7-6.
Stanford's two singles victories came from 45th-ranked Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY/Bellmore-Kennedy HS) at No. 2 and 37th-ranked Ryan Haviland (Aiken, SC/Sumter HS) at No. 4.
The Cardinal opened the dual by winning two of three doubles matches to capture the first point of the afternoon. California then roared back to capture the win. The match is the first of two between the schools this year, and does not count in the Pac-10 standings.
Stanford will next host unranked Utah (5-3) on Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the Taube Tennis Center.
