BERKELEY, Calif. - The third-ranked Stanford women's team improved to 8-1 on the season with an impressive 7-0 road win over No. 14 California (5-1) on Saturday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
Stanford opened the match by capturing the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles matches to clinch the first point of the dual.
The Cardinal received doubles victories from second-ranked Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, FL/Boca Raton Prep) and Gabriela Lastra (Reno, NV/Reno HS) at No. 1 and eighth-ranked Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge HS) and Erin Burdette (Jackson, GA/Monroe Academy) at No. 2.
Stanford played the waiting game in singles competition, and after a two-hour rain delay, won all six matches. More impressively, four of those six wins came in straight sets.
At No. 1 singles, 11th-ranked Kalvaria out-deuled 40th-ranked Raquel Kops-Jones 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. The Cardinal also received wins from the 16th-ranked Lastra, ninth-ranked Barnikow, 15th-ranked Burdette, 103rd-ranked Keiko Tokuda (Clifton, NJ/Clifton HS) and Emilia Anderson (Cincinnati, OH/Anderson HS).
Stanford returns to action on Friday at the Taube Tennis Center when it hosts a Pac-10 contest against 59th-ranked Oregon (7-5) at 1:30 p.m.
