STANFORD, Calif. - The third-ranked Stanford University women's tennis team opened its quest for the 2002 Pacific-10 Conference title with an easy 7-0 home win over No. 60 Oregon on Friday afternoon at the Taube Tennis Center.
The Cardinal (9-1 overall, 1-0 Pac-10) dropped just 26 games in the nine matches against the Ducks (6-6, 0-1).
Stanford lost just two games in the three doubles matches. Second-ranked Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, FL/Boca Raton Prep) and Gabriela Lastra (Reno, NV/Reno HS) prevailed 8-1 at No. 1, and eighth-ranked Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge HS) and Erin Burdette (Jackson, GA/Monroe Academy) rolled to an 8-0 victory at No. 2.
The Cardinal won five of the six singles matches in straight sets, including a 6-2, 6-0 win by the 11th-ranked Kalvaria at No. 1. Stanford also received singles victories from the 16th-ranked Lastra, ninth-ranked Barnikow, 15th-ranked Burdette, 103rd-ranked Keiko Tokuda and Emilia Anderson (Cincinnati, OH/Anderson HS).
Stanford plays its second home match in as many days when it takes on No. 44 San Diego State (5-2) on Saturday at noon at the Taube Tennis Center.
