STANFORD, Calif. - The fifth-ranked Stanford University men's tennis team extended its winning streak to six with a 7-0 non-conference home win over Brigham Young University on Wednesday afternoon at the Taube Tennis Center. The Cardinal improved to 13-1 on the season, while the 72nd-ranked Cougars fell to 7-7.
The highlight of the dual came at No.1 doubles, as two of the top 10 ranked teams in the nation went head-to-head. BYU's Carlos Lozano (Mexico City, Mexico) and Gert Vilms (Tallinn, Estonia), who are ranked 10th in the nation, jumped out to an early 5-4 lead against top-ranked Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY/Bellmore-Kennedy HS) and David Martin (Tulsa, OK/Boca Raton Prep) of Stanford. Lipsky and Martin, however, won the next four games to capture the match 8-5 and improve to 24-4 on the season.
Stanford swept all six singles matches, though BYU stretched three of those contests to three sets. In all three of those matches, Stanford dropped the first set but rallied to win the next two.
At No. 2 singles, Martin dropped the first set to Lozano 6-3 before rallying to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-3. The Cardinal also received three-set victories from Ryan Haviland (Aiken, SC/Sumter HS) at No. 3 (5-7, 6-3, 6-1) and Joe Kao (Fullerton, CA/Sunny Hills HS) at No. 6 (5-7, 7-5, 6-2.)
Wednesday's match-up was Stanford's final tune-up before Pacific-10 Conference play begins on Friday. The Cardinal hosts 62nd-ranked Oregon on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and 34th-ranked Washington on Saturday at noon. BYU returns home to face No. 66 Boise State on Saturday.
