STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford extended its winning streak to eight with an impressive 6-1 win over visiting Washington on Saturday afternoon at the Taube Tennis Center. The fifth-ranked Cardinal improved to 15-1 overall and 2-0 in the Pacific-10 Conference, while the 34th-ranked Huskies fell to 14-4 and 0-2.
Stanford, which has won the eight straight matches by a combined score of 52-4, won five of the six singles matches in addition to winning all three doubles match-ups.
The Cardinal won three of the five singles matches in straight sets, including fourth-ranked K.J. Hippensteel's (Roanoke, VA) 6-3, 6-3 win over 39th-ranked Alex Vlaski (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) at No. 1. Hippensteel improved to 18-2 on the season, and has won six of his last seven.
Stanford also received straight set victories from 57th-ranked junior Ryan Haviland (Aiken, SC) at No. 4 and freshman Sam Warburg (Sacramento, CA) at No. 5. Warburg is now 20-7 on the season, and has won eight straight dating back to Feb. 25.
Washington picked up its lone point at No. 6 singles, as Dillon Ruby (Westlake Village, CA) outlasted Phil Sheng (Thousand Oaks, CA) 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
The Cardinal returns to action on Friday at 1:30 p.m. when it visits No. 18 USC in a match that will not count in the Pac-10 standings. Washington returns home to host No. 63 Arizona on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
