No. 11 Men's Gymnastics Upsets No. 2 Oklahoma

March 9, 2002

Stanford, Calif. - No. 11 Stanford men's gymnastics (9-9) posted new season high team scores on three events to give head coach Sadao Hamada a win in his last home meet at the helm of the Cardinal. At the end of the season, Hamada will retire after 30 years on The Farm. Seniors Rico Andrade, Jason Biltz, Justin Berkman, Dave Durante, David Ludlow and Cade Raggio competed in their last home meet as part of the Cardinal squad and upset No. 2 Oklahoma 214.700-214.550.

The Cardinal lead after the first three rotations, but the Sooners slipped ahead to take control after the fourth rotation. With one event left, Oklahoma was leading by just over a point, but the veteran Cardinal team took over on the horizontal bar and with Andrade's 9.150, Stanford wrapped up the meet.

Although the Cardinal celebrated senior night today, the underclassmen stepped up for the meet. Junior Marshall Erwin notched his third 9.950 on rings this season, taking first place in the event while sophomore Dan Gill handed in a 9.550 on vault and junior Paul O'Leary posted a 9.500 on the parallel bars - both scores also good for first place.

With a 53.750, Durante posted his highest All-Around score of his career in his last performance in Burnham Pavilion. He captured second place on three events (floor, pommel horse and parallel bars) en route to his first place All-Around score. Raggio posted a career-high mark of 9.400 on vault to take second place behind teammate Gill. Biltz made his first appearance of the year with an 8.500 on pommel horse.

The Cardinal will be back in action at the MPSF Championships on March 22-23 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
