STANFORD, Calif. - Third-ranked Stanford University (19-1 overall, 5-0 Pacific-10 Conference) posted its fifth consecutive win over a top 25 opponent with a 7-0 home victory over No. 21 Arizona (10-9, 3-3) on Friday afternoon at the Taube Tennis Center.
The Cardinal opened the match by winning all three doubles contests to take a 1-0 lead.At No. 1, second-ranked Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, FL) and Gabriela Lastra (Reno, NV) defeated the 13th-ranked team of Debbie Larocque (Laval, Canada) and Maja Mlakar (Maribor, Slovenia) 8-3. Kalvaria and Lastra are now 21-2 overall and 13-1 in dual competition. At No. 2, 14th-ranked Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, NJ) and Erin Burdette (Jackson, GA) cruised to an 8-2 victory over Laresa Marino (San Diego, CA) and Marie-Pier Pouliot (St. Georges de Beauce, CA).
The Cardinal was impressive in singles play, taking all six matches in straight sets. At No. 1, the 10th-ranked Kalvaria moved to 18-5 on the season with an impressive 6-1, 6-2 victory over the 13th-ranked Mlakar. Also in singles competition, the 18th-ranked Lastra defeated the 87th-ranked Larocque 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 and the 14th-ranked Barnikow beat the 95th-ranked Dianne Hollands 7-6 (5), 6-1 at No. 3.
Stanford also received singles victories from Burdette, senior Keiko Tokuda (Clifton, NJ) and sophomore Emilia Anderson (Cincinnati, OH).
The Cardinal concludes its 2001-02 regular season home schedule on Saturday when it hosts No. 9 Arizona State (12-5, 3-2) at noon. It will be the final regular season home match for three Stanford seniors - Kalvaria, Lastra and Tokuda. The Wildcats also return to action on Saturday at noon, as they visit No. 15 California (11-6, 2-2).
