Stanford, Calif. - No. 2 Stanford (26-8) won for the 18th time in the last 22 games with a 19-2 non-conference rout over Saint Mary's (15-17) on a chilly evening Tuesday at Sunken Diamond. The victory extended Stanford's win streak over the Gaels to 16 straight games dating back to 1994 as the Cardinal tied a season-high for runs scored and collected 16 hits. Andy Topham (3-4, 2B, 2 3B, 5 RBI) and Chris O'Riordan (3-5, 4 RBI) combined to drive in nine runs, while Sam Fuld (4-6, 3B, RBI) tied a career-high with four hits to pace the Stanford offense. Brian Hall (2-4, SB) and Donny Lucy (2-2, 2B) added two hits each, while Arik VanZandt picked up a pair of RBI.
"We did a good job on offense tonight and are swinging the bats pretty well," said Stanford head coach Mark Marquess.
O'Riordan moved back on top of Stanford's career batting average list with a .363 lifetime mark and extended his hit streak to eight games, the longest current streak on the club.
J.D. Willcox (2-1) earned the victory as the third of seven Stanford pitchers by coming on to get the Cardinal out of a second inning jam by retiring all three batters he faced.
Carlos Quentin hit his seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot over the left field fence in the bottom of the second inning that tied the game at 2-2, erasing a short-lived 2-0 Saint Mary's lead. Stanford added two more runs in the inning on an RBI double by Topham and an RBI single from O'Riordan to take a 4-2 lead.
The Cardinal scored two more times in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI triple by Topham and an RBI single from O'Riordan for a 6-2 advantage.
Stanford blew the game open with five runs in the bottom of the seventh and eight more in the bottom of the eighth to mark the 17th and 18th times the team has scored five or more runs in an inning this season.
Hall drove in the first two runs of the Cardinal seventh inning with a single to score Ryan Garko and Quentin. Topham then walked with the bases loaded for the third Cardinal run before the final two runs scored on a single by O'Riordan.
Lucy's pinch-hit single, his first of two hits in the inning, started Stanford's eight-run rally in the eighth. The Cardinal then drew three straight walks, the final one with the bases loaded to Danny Putnam for its first of eight runs in the frame. VanZandt doubled home the next two Cardinal runs before Topham made the score 16-2 with a two-RBI triple, his second three-bagger of the game. Andrew Cleary was credited with an RBI when he reached on error to score Topham. Fuld tripled to score Cleary and the Cardinal finished its scoring on an RBI double by Lucy.
Saint Mary's scored its only two runs of the game in the first two innings on a sacrifice fly by Brian Houle in the first inning and a solo homer to lead off the second by Mike Harris.
Harris (2-3, HR, RBI), Jason Waugh (2-4) and Mark Teahen (2-3) had two hits each for the Gaels.The Gaels were victimized by four errors and eight walks by its pitching staff.
The final five pitchers used by Stanford - Willcox, Dan Rich, Mark Jecmen, Jonny Dyer and Darin Naatjes - combined to shut out the Gaels on just four hits over 8.0 innings of work.
A total of 39 players participated in the contest (Stanford 22, Saint Mary's 17).
Stanford posted double-digit runs for the 10th time this season and double-digit hits for the 25th time as the Cardinal improved to 4-0 in Tuesday games.
The Cardinal left eight runners on base, while Saint Mary's stranded five.
Stanford will next be in action with a three-game Pac-10 series at Washington this Friday-Sunday, April 19-21 (6:30 pm, 1 pm, 1 pm, PT).
