San Jose, Calif. - The second-ranked Stanford women's water polo team gave up two goals in the first quarter, but allowed San Jose State to score just three more the entire game en route to a 13-5 Cardinal win over the Spartans on Saturday afternoon in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Aquatics Center.
Stanford started the first period as Brenda Villa (Commerce, CA) scored the first goal of the game at 6:02. The Spartans then countered with two goals by Christine Welsh (4:56) and Allison Kurvers (3:46) to take a 2-1 lead. Kate Pettit (Bainbridge Island, WA) then scored for Stanford at 3:33 to tie the game at 2-2, before Ellen Estes (Novato, CA) scored her first of four goals in the match to give Stanford the lead for good at 3-2.
The Cardinal then held SJSU scoreless in the second period. Four different Stanford players scored in the period - Wendy Watkins (Modesto, CA), Estes, Villa and Kelty Luber (Beaverton, OR) to give the Cardinal a 7-2 halftime lead.
Stanford then scored four more goals in the third period and two in the fourth for the victory. Estes finished her scoring with two goals in the third period, while Villa and Luber also added goals in the third. Hannah Luber (Beaverton, OR) and Cindy Henn (Orange, CA) scored in the fourth period for the victory.
San Jose State scored its only goal in the third period on a Jessamyn Grewal shot. The Spartans got two goals in the fourth period by Stefanie LeSueur and Welsh for its five goals.
Stanford improved to 19-1 overall and 10-1 in the MPSF, while the Spartans fell to 17-10 overall and 5-6 in the conference. Both teams will play at the MPSF Tournament next weekend at USC.
