STANFORD-SACRAMENTO STATE PREVIEW AND HISTORY
Stanford struggled last weekend at Washington, losing two-of-three games to snap its regular season series win streak at 12. The Cardinal has just a 5-4 record over its last nine games. Sacramento State has had much tougher times. The Hornets are 0-12 in Big West action and have dropped 14 of their last 16 overall. Stanford is hitting .325 with a 3.98 ERA and a .970 fielding percentage. Sacramento State has struggled in all three areas with a .258 batting average, 5.81 ERA and .955 fielding percentage. Last year, Sacramento State shocked the Cardinal with a 12-3 victory at Raley Field in Sacramento on May 2, 2001, to snap an eight-game losing streak to the Cardinal. Stanford holds a 13-9 all-time advantage in the series (since 1977) and won 18-2 the last time the teams met at Sunken Diamond on April 4, 2000.
A CLOSER LOOK AT LAST YEAR'S STANFORD-SACRAMENTO STATE GAME
at Sacramento State 12, Stanford 3 (May 2, 2001) - Sacramento State scored seven times in the bottom of the sixth inning on the way to a 12-3 upset victory over Stanford at Raley Field. Sacramento State snapped an eight-game losing streak to Stanford, beating the Cardinal for the first time since May 8, 1995. Aurelio Jackson (3-3, 2B, RBI, SB, 2 BB, HP) reached base in all six of his plate appearances. Tim Maghan (3-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI) and Mario Celillo (3-5, 2B, RBI) added three hits each for the Hornets, while Joe Evans (2-4, 2B, RBI) had a pair of hits. Sacramento State starter Jeffery Groeger (5-7) earned the victory in a complete game performance, scattering eight hits and three runs. Jeremy Guthrie (8-4) suffered the loss, allowing five runs and six hits in 4.0 innings. Stanford's Jonny Ash (2-3) was the only Cardinal with more than one hit, while Carlos Quentin had a double and two RBI.

STANFORD-OREGON STATE BASEBALL SERIES PREVIEW AND HISTORY
Stanford will travel to Oregon State for a three-game Pac-10 series this Friday-Sunday, April 26-28 (6 pm, 4 pm, 1 pm, PT). Stanford currently sits tied for third place in the Pac-10, 2.5 games behind league leader USC (24-16, 9-3 Pac-10) and one game behind second place Arizona State (25-15, 9-6 Pac-10). Oregon State is currently in a tie for sixth place in the Pac-10 (25-14, 4-5 Pac-10) after losing two-of-three games to UCLA at home last Friday-Sunday. The Beavers had won five in a row and nine of 11 before losing the final two games of the series against the Bruins. Stanford has won the last four meetings between the clubs with the last Oregon State victory coming in a 5-2 win in Corvallis on April 6, 2000. Last year, the Cardinal swept the Beavers in a three-game series at Sunken Diamond (4/12, 4-1, 4/13, 8-1, 4/14, 22-5 in 7 innings). Stanford leads the all-time series, 29-9.

at Stanford 22, Oregon State 5 -- 7 innings (April 14, 2001) - Stanford exploded for a season-high 22 runs in a 22-5 victory over Oregon State to complete a three-game sweep. Arik VanZandt (2-4, 3B, HR, 6 RBI) and Carlos Quentin (2-3, 2B, HR, 5 RBI) combined to drive in 11 runs as both established new career-highs for RBI. VanZandt also hit his first career grandslam in the bottom of the fifth inning. Brian Hall (4-5, 2 RBI) had a new career-high four hits and Sam Fuld (4-5, 2 RBI) equaled his career-high hit total. Mike Gosling earned the victory, limiting the Beavers to three runs and three hits over the first 5.0 innings. Josh Carter (2-3) was the only Oregon State player with more than one hit. Mark McLemore took the loss, allowing seven runs and five hits in 2.1 innings.

at Stanford 8, Oregon State 1 (April 13, 2001) - Jeff Bruksch tossed his second complete game of the season as Stanford defeated Oregon State, 8-1. Ryan Garko (4-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI) and Chris O'Riordan (4-4, 2B, HR, RBI) both had career-high-tying four-hit games, while Andy Topham (3-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI) had three hits. Bruksch allowed just five hits and one run, while striking out eight and walking none. He retired 12 in a row at one point and allowed just one runner past second base after the Beavers scored a run in the second inning. Brian Barden (2-3) was the only Oregon State player with more than one hit. Scott Nicholson (7-2) was charged with the loss as he allowed 16 hits and eight runs in 7.2 innings.

at Stanford 4, Oregon State 1 (April 12, 2001) - Jeremy Guthrie struck out a career-high-tying 11 batters as Stanford defeated Oregon State, 4-1. Ryan Garko's two-RBI double in the bottom of the second inning gave Stanford a 2-0 lead the club would never relinquish. Guthrie won for the eighth time in his last nine starts, allowing just five hits and one run over the first 8.0 innings. J.D. Willcox pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his second save of the season. Guthrie carried a no-hitter into the top of the fifth inning before Oregon State's Brian Barden led off the frame with a single. Barden (2-3) was the only player for either team with more than one hit. Oregon State's Thad Johnson was charged with the loss despite limiting the Cardinal to four runs and seven hits. Johnson struck out six and walked two.

2002 STANFORD-WASHINGTON GAME REVIEWS
at Washington 4, Stanford 3 -- 10 innings (April 21, 2002) - Washington upset Stanford with a 4-3 victory to win two-of-three games in the series. Kyle Larsen's RBI single up the middle off the glove of diving Cardinal second baseman Chris O'Riordan with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Greg Isaacson with the game-winning run. The series victory marked the first time Washington has defeated Stanford in a regular season series. Shawn Kohn picked up his second victory in the series by holding the Cardinal scoreless over the final 2.0 innings in his first relief appearance of the season. The Husky ace entered the game to begin the ninth inning and was pitching on just one day's rest after tossing a six-hit complete game to beat the Cardinal, 3-1, in the series opener Friday. Larsen (2-3, HR, 2 RBI), Isaacson (2-4) and Tila Reynolds (2-5) had two hits each for Washington, while Sam Fuld (2-5, 2 SB) was the only Cardinal player with more than one hit. Ryan McCally took the loss for Stanford.

Stanford 9, at Washington 4 (April 20, 2002) - Stanford scored seven times in the final three innings for a 9-4 comeback victory over Washington. Cardinal reliever Dan Rich earned his first victory since 1999, posting new career-highs with six strikeouts and 4.2 innings pitched. Stanford trailed the entire game before tying the contest with two runs in the top of the seventh and taking its first lead on a one-out RBI single by Arik VanZandt in the top of the eighth inning. Stanford added four insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Jason Cooper (3-4, 2 2B) and Ryan Garko (3-5, RBI) led a Stanford offense that collected 17 hits, while Carlos Quentin (2-4, 2 RBI), Sam Fuld (2-4), Brian Hall (2-5, 3B, 2 RBI) and VanZandt (2-5, RBI) had two hits each. Aaron Hathaway (3-4, 2B, 4 RBI) and Tyler Davidson (2-4) led the Husky offense.

at Washington 3, Stanford 1 (April 19, 2002) - Aaron Hathaway and Greg Isaacson bounced back-to-back two-out RBI singles through the infield in the bottom of the seventh inning and Shawn Kohn pitched a complete game six-hitter to lift Washington to a 3-1 upset victory over Stanford. Stanford reliever Ryan McCally (3-1) was charged with his first loss of the season after giving up both Washington runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Kohn (7-2) struck out just two Cardinal batters but did not issue a walk while pitching his fourth complete game of the season. Chris O'Riordan (2-4, 2B) and Sam Fuld (2-4) had two hits each for the Cardinal, while Hathaway (2-3) was the only Washington player with more than one hit.

STANFORD FALLS TO NO. 4 IN MAJOR NATIONAL POLLS
Stanford sits to No. 4 this week in all four major national polls released April 22 by Baseball America, Baseball Weekly/ESPN, Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA. The Cardinal dropped two spots from No. 2 in both the Baseball America and Baseball Weekly/ESPN polls, while falling one spot from No. 3 in the Collegiate Baseball and remaining No. 4 in the NCBWA poll. Stanford began the season as the nation's unanimous No. 1 team and stayed on top of the Baseball America poll for the first seven weeks of the season. Stanford spent two weeks (4/9 - 4/16) last year as the nation's unanimous No. 1 team and six weeks as Baseball America's top team (3/12 - 4/16) before finishing the year at No. 2 in all four polls. Stanford has been ranked No. 1 at one point during each of the past six years (including 2002). Stanford's poll history includes a run as "king of the polls" in 1998 when the team held the top spot in the Baseball America poll for the entire regular season (a record 14 consecutive weeks). Arizona State (No. 17 Baseball Weekly/ESPN, No. 30 Collegiate Baseball, No. 23 NCBWA) and USC (No. 23 Collegiate Baseball, No. 32 NCBWA) are the other ranked Pac-10 teams.
REGULAR SEASON SERIES WIN STREAK ENDS AT 12
Stanford's regular season series win streak ended at 12 and just shy of one calendar year after the Cardinal dropped two-of-three games at Washington (4/19 - 4/21). The Cardinal began the streak last season with series victories over Arizona (5/11 - 5/13/01) and at Washington State (5/18 - 5/20/01). This year, the Cardinal won its first 10 regular season series versus Cal State Fullerton (2/1 - 2/3), at Florida State (2/8 - 2/10), at Fresno State (2/15 - 2/18), versus Santa Clara (2/22 - 2/24), versus Cal Poly (3/1 - 3/3), at California (3/8 - 3/10), at USC (3/23 - 3/24), versus Texas (3/28 - 3/30), at Arizona (4/5 - 4/7) and versus USC (4/12 - 4/14). Stanford had three sweeps (first Arizona series, Cal Poly, first USC series) during the stretch and won two-of-three games in the other nine series. Stanford had previously won 17 consecutive series before being defeated two-of-three games in back-to-back series at USC (4/20 - 4/22/01) and at California (4/27 - 4/29/01) last year and has won 29 of its last 32 regular season series.
CARDINAL DROPS FIRST SERIES OPENER AT WASHINGTON
Stanford lost a series opener for the first time this season with a 3-1 defeat at Washington (4/19). The Cardinal began the season with victories in each of its first 10 series openers versus Cal State Fullerton (2/1, 7-4), at Florida State (2/8, 9-3), at Fresno State (2/15, 6-2), versus Santa Clara (2/22, 5-4), versus Cal Poly (3/1, 8-6), at California (3/8, 15-4), at USC, 9-6 (3/23 - Game 1), versus Texas (3/28, 7-6 in 10 innings), at Arizona (4/5, 5-4 in 18 innings) and versus USC (4/12, 6-5 in 10 innings).
COMEBACK CARDINAL
Stanford has trailed before coming back in 13 of its 27 wins -- (vs. Cal State Fullerton, 2/1, 2/2, at Florida State, 2/9, vs. Santa Clara, 2/22, 2/24, at Cal, 3/8, vs. Texas, 3/28, at Arizona, 4/5, at USC, 3/23 - Game 1, vs. San Jose State, 4/9, vs. USC, 4/11, vs. Saint Mary's, 4/16, at Washington, 4/20).
HOT STRETCH ENDS WITH 5-4 RECORD IN LAST NINE GAMES
Stanford has struggled to a 5-4 record over its last nine games (4/7 - 4/21) after having previously won 14 of 16 games (2/24 - 4/6) in its hottest stretch of the season. The Cardinal began the hot stretch with a five-game win streak, beginning with a victory over Santa Clara (2/24) before sweeping Cal Poly (3/1 - 3/3) and taking the first game in a series at California (3/8). After dropping the middle game of the series at California (3/9), Stanford won another five straight games with a victory at California (3/10), a three-game sweep at USC (3/23 - 3/24) and a win in the series-opener versus Texas (3/28). The Cardinal then dropped the middle game of the series versus Texas (3/29) before four straight wins over Texas (3/30), USF (4/2) and the first two games of a series at Arizona (4/5 - 4/6).
WINNING THE CLOSE ONES
Stanford has been successful in extra-inning and one-run games this season. The Cardinal has posted a 4-2 mark in extra-inning contests and is 7-3 in one-run games.
POWER CUT
After hitting 11 homers in a three-game series versus USC (4/12 - 4/14), the Cardinal managed just one long ball in its most recent three-game series at Washington (4/19 - 4/26). Stanford homered a season-high five times in the middle game of the USC series, a wild 16-11 loss to the Trojans. The Cardinal also went deep three times in both the series opener and finale, both Stanford wins. Jason Cooper hit three of the 11 homers, while Arik VanZandt and Brian Hall both hit a pair of longballs. The other four homers came from Chris O'Riordan, Danny Putnam, Chris Carter and Carlos Quentin. Ryan Garko had the team's only homer in the Washington series when he went deep in the seventh inning of the final game of the series (4/21).
CHRIS O'RIORDAN MOVES TO TOP OF CAREER BATTING AVERAGE LIST
Chris O'Riordan has moved to the top of Stanford's career batting average list (.363, 231-637) after going 22-for-50 (.450) with two doubles, three homers, 11 RBI and two stolen bases during his current career-high-tying 11-game hit streak (4/5 - 4/21) that started on the first day of Pac-10 action.
CHRIS O'RIORDAN EXTENDS ON BASE STREAK TO 37
Chris O'Riordan has reached base in each of Stanford's 37 games this season and has hit safely in 34 of 37. The last time O'Riordan did not reach base in a game was when he went 0-for-4 in the 2001 CWS Championship game, a 12-1 loss to Miami.
CHRIS O'RIORDAN EXTENDS CONSECUTIVE GAMES STARTED STREAK TO 144
Chris O'Riordan extended his string of consecutive games started to 144 by starting all three games at second base during the recent Washington series (4/19 - 4/21/01).
CHRIS O'RIORDAN LEADING CARDINAL IN PAC-10 PLAY
Chris O'Riordan has been Stanford's top hitter among regulars in Pac-10 action with a .439 batting average (18-41) in nine Pac-10 games. O'Riordan has also contributed two doubles, three homers, seven RBI and a pair of stolen bases.
SAM FULD BACK ON CAREER BATTING AVERAGE LIST IN NINTH PLACE TIE
Sam Fuld has moved back onto Stanford's career batting average list tied for ninth (.349, 138-395) after going 12-for-22 (.545) during his current five-game hit streak.
GUTHRIE KEEPS 11-GAME WIN STREAK WITH FOURTH STRAIGHT NO-DECISION
Jeremy Guthrie has picked up no decisions in each of his last four starts at Washington (4/19), versus USC (4/12), at Arizona (4/5) and versus Texas (3/28) to keep his 11-game win streak on the mound alive. Guthrie has arguably had three of his best performances in his last three outings (all Pac-10 games) as he has recorded a 1.80 ERA with 20 strikeouts and only 17 hits allowed in 25.0 innings. Guthrie was taken off the hook for the loss versus Texas when Chris O'Riordan hit a grandslam with a two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game before the Cardinal eventually won 7-6 in 10 innings. Guthrie has picked up six victories and five no decisions in his 11 starts this year. Guthrie was 8-4 at one point last season before winning his final five decisions of 2001 and was last defeated at Sacramento State (5/2/01).

Stanford's regular starting pitching rotation of Jeremy Guthrie (6-0, 2.84, 79.1 IP, 73 SO), Tim Cunningham (5-2, 4.24, 63.2 IP, 36 SO) and John Hudgins (6-0, 4.63, 58.1 IP, 41 SO) has improved to a combined 17-2 with a 3.44 ERA this season.
DAN RICH PICKS UP FIRST WIN SINCE 1999
Senior Dan Rich picked up his first victory since 1999 when he recorded new career-highs of 4.2 innings pitched and six strikeouts in an outstanding relief performance in a 9-4 win at Washington (4/21). Rich was 3-1 with a 3.66 ERA as a freshman before struggling as a sophomore (0-2, 11.37) and missing most of his junior year due to an injury. He is 1-0 with a 1.12 ERA in 16.0 innings with 19 strikeouts this year.

A NEW DAY
Stanford's game versus Sacramento State this Wednesday, April 24 (6 pm) will mark the first time the Cardinal has played on a Wednesday this season and the only time the club is scheduled to play on a Wednesday during the regular season.

STANFORD BASEBALL HISTORY
Stanford's storied baseball program has had many highlights as the program is in its 109th season with an all-time record of 2306-1458-32 (.612). The Cardinal won NCAA titles in 1987 and 1988 before returning to the CWS championship game in each of the last two years (2000, 2001). The program has had winning seasons in 36 of its last 37 campaigns (also 53 of the last 55), has recorded three straight 50-win seasons for the first time in school history (1999-2001) and reached the 40-win mark in seven consecutive campaigns (1995-2001). Just a few of the other highlights have included 13 College World Series appearances, 18 conference titles and 22 NCAA Tournament berths. Stanford has boasted a total of 43 All-Americans who have earned a total of 50 All-American honors. Stanford has also garnered three NCAA Player of the Year choices in Jeff Austin (1998), David McCarty (1991) and Steve Dunning (1970). Other numbers for the Cardinal Baseball program include 96 All-Conference players earning a total of 121 All-Conference honors, 57 major league players and 12 first round draft picks in the last 15 years.

The team's batting average dropped to a season-low .315 at one point but the Cardinal has rebounded with 12 or more hits in eight of its last 11 games. Stanford's ERA currently sits at 3.98 through its first 37 games, 0.48 higher than last year's final 3.50 mark. Stanford's regular starting rotation of Jeremy Guthrie (6-0, 2.84, 79.1 IP, 73 SO), Tim Cunningham (5-2, 4.24, 63.2 IP, 36 SO) and John Hudgins (6-0, 4.63, 58.1 IP, 41 SO) is a combined 17-2 with a 3.44 ERA. Guthrie leads the club in innings pitched and strikeouts, while co-leading the team along with Hudgins in victories. Cunningham is second in innings pitched and third in victories, while Hudgins is second in strikeouts. Guthrie had the team's longest performance of the year with a career-high 10.0 innings pitched at Arizona (4/5). Hudgins has the staff's only complete game in a 7-2 win over Texas (3/30). STANFORD HEAD COACH MARK MARQUESS
One of the nation's premier collegiate coaches, Mark Marquess is in his 26th season at the helm of Stanford Baseball in 2002. Marquess has a career record of 1073-525-5 (.672), all at Stanford. Marquess coached his 1600th game at Stanford last week in a 19-2 win over Saint Mary's (4/16). Last year, he became the 23rd coach in the history of NCAA Division I baseball to reach the 1000-win mark with a 6-2 victory over Florida State in a game played on February 9, 2001. The 1969 Stanford graduate has led the Cardinal to two NCAA titles (1987, `88) and two other CWS title game appearances (2000, `01), as well as 11 College World Series appearances (1982, `83, `85, `87, `88, `90, `95, `97, `99, 2000, `01), 11 NCAA Regional titles (1982, `83, `85, `87, `88, `90, `95, `97, `99, 2000, `01), 10 Pac-10 or Pac-10 Southern Division regular season titles (1983, `84, `85, `87, `90, `94, `97, `98, `99, 2000) and three NCAA Super Regional championships (1999, 2000, `01). The Cardinal has qualified for the NCAA Tournament 19 times under Marquess. He began the 2002 season ranked 12th in victories and 16th in winning percentage among active Division I baseball coaches, while ranking 23rd on the all-time victory list and 42nd on the all-time winning percentage list. He has been named NCAA Coach of the Year three times (1985, `87, `88) and has received Pac-10 or Pac-10 Southern Division Coach of the Year honors on eight occasions (1983, `85, `87, `90, `94, `97, `98, `99). The Cardinal has suffered just one losing season during his tenure and has finished either first or second in the prestigious Pacific-10 (formerly Pac-10 Southern Division) 19 times in the last 21 seasons. Stanford has had 99 professional baseball draft picks in the past 17 seasons, including 12 first round selections in the last 15 years. A member of the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Marquess was the head coach of the 1988 United States Olympic baseball team that captured the gold medal. Marquess was also an accomplished football and baseball standout on The Farm and is a member of the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame. He is one of only six collegiate baseball head coaches to have both played and coached in the College World Series. Marquess was the starting first baseman and a First Team All-American on Stanford's 1967 College World Series squad and played four seasons of minor league baseball with the Chicago White Sox organization.

STANFORD COACHING STAFF
Dean Stotz is in his 26th campaign with Stanford Baseball and his third season as associate head coach after he was promoted to the position prior to the 2000 campaign. Stotz served for 23 years as an assistant. Stotz currently coaches third base while also handling various offensive and defensive aspects of the game. Tom Kunis (3rd season) handles the Cardinal pitching staff, while Dave Nakama (3rd season) returns as an assistant coach after three seasons as the head coach at San Francisco State. Nakama, also a Cardinal assistant in 1997 and 1998, assists with all aspects of the game and serves as Stanford's first base coach.
