Women's Distance Medley Relay Team Places Second at Penn Relays

Philadelphia, Pa - North Carolina pulled away in the final stages of the women's distance medley relay to beat Stanford on Thursday during first day action at the Penn Relays.

North Carolina ran the distance in a time of 11:00.33. Stanford was timed in 11:10.00.

Malindi Elmore ran the opening segment in the 1,200 meters in a time of 3:24.9, to nudge ahead of UNC's Erin Donohue.

The race remained close during the second leg but Anissa Gainey of UNC gave her team the lead by virtue of her time of 52.9 in the 400 meters compared to Cardinal freshman Christine Moschella who ran a 54.4.

In the 800 meters, North Carolina continued to hold a slim lead as Alice Schmidt ran a 2:06.9 compared to Stanford's Ashley Wysong at 2:06.5.

The final leg of the race, the mile run, turned completely in favor of North Carolina as Shalane Flanagan ran 4:35.1 compared to Lauren Fleshman at 4:44.2.

Georgetown finished third at 11:18.12.
