OJAI, Calif. - Stanford University juniors Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY) and David Martin (Tulsa, OK) advanced to the final of the Pacific-10 Conference Doubles Championship on Saturday afternoon at Libbey Park.
Lipsky and Martin, who are ranked second in the nation, reached the final with a hard-fought 9-8 victory over 55th-ranked Tobias Clemens and Lassi Ketola of UCLA. The win was Lipsky and Martin's second in as many tries this season over Clemens and Ketola.
The Cardinal team will play for the Pac-10 Championship on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Libbey Park against top-ranked Marcin Matkowski and Julien Rojer of UCLA. This will be the fourth meeting between the teams this season - Lipsky and Martin currently hold a 2-1 advantage - and third in a tournament final. Matkowski and Rojer prevailed 8-5 in the ITA All-American Final on October 14 in Stone Mountain, Georgia, while Lipsky and Martin were 9-8 winners in the National Collegiate Tennis Classic Final on January 19 in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the only dual match-up between the teams, Lipsky and Martin walked away with a 9-7 victory on April 19 at Stanford.
Two Stanford players - senior Chris Meyer (Berkeley, CA) and freshman Phil Sheng (Thousand Oaks, CA) - saw action in the consolation singles bracket against opponents from the University of Oregon. Meyer fell to Johan Paalberg 6-2, 6-3, while Sheng dropped a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision to Sven Swinnen.
The Pacific-10 Conference Individual Championships conclude on Sunday with the singles and doubles finals.
