Corvallis, Ore. - John Hudgins tossed his first career shutout and No. 4 Stanford (29-12, 6-6 Pac-10) picked up 19 hits in a 13-0 blowout victory over Oregon State (27-15, 6-6 Pac-10) to salvage the final game of a three-game series at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field on Sunday. Sam Fuld (4-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, SB) and Chris O'Riordan (4-6, 2B, HR, 3 RBI) led the Cardinal offense with four hits each. Fuld added a career-high five runs scored, the most runs scored by a Cardinal player in a game this season.
Hudgins allowed just four hits and struck out five in pitching the first shutout for the Cardinal this season as he improved to 7-0 overall. He retired 14 straight batters at one point from the third through the seventh innings. The last Cardinal complete game shutout was pitched by Mike Gosling in an 8-0 win at California on April 29, 2001.
"John Hudgins had a masterful performance today," said Stanford head coach Mark Marquess. "It was also great to see our offense get untracked."
Ryan Garko (3-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI), Andy Topham (3-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI) and Scott Dragicevich (3-5) added three hits each for Stanford, who doubled six times on the afternoon.Aaron Mathews (2-4) had half of Oregon State's four hits.
Stanford scored in seven of its nine opportunities at the plate, beginning in the top of the first inning when Fuld walked with one out, stole second and scored on a two-out RBI double by Garko.
The Cardinal added three runs in the third inning, the first two coming on a homer to left field by O'Riordan to snap out of an 0-for-8 stretch in the series. Topham restarted the rally with a two-out double down the left line and scored on another double by Donny Lucy.Stanford made the score 5-0 in the top of the fourth inning when Fuld doubled with two outs and scored on an RBI single by O'Riordan.
Stanford scored another single run in the top of the fifth when Garko singled to lead off the inning, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on an RBI double down the right field line by Topham.
The Cardinal increased its lead to 10-0 with four runs in the top of the sixth. Stanford loaded the bases on a leadoff single by Scott Dragicevich before a one-out walk to Fuld and a single by O'Riordan. Garko brought home the first Cardinal run of the inning when he drew a bases loaded walk from Beaver reliever Ty Kline. Stanford scored its next run when Carlos Quentin hit a ground ball to Beaver third baseman Brian Barden, who stepped on third base for the second out of the inning before overthrowing first base in an attempt to complete the double play. Fuld scored on the play and Quentin was credited with a fielders choice RBI. The Cardinal added runs later in the inning when Garko scored on a wild pitch before Topham singled home Quentin.
Stanford scored two more runs in the top of the eighth inning to make the score 12-0 when Fuld led off the frame with a long solo homer to rightcenter field before O'Riordan and Garko followed with back-to-back doubles.
Stanford finished its scoring in the bottom of the ninth when Fuld singled home Chris Carter, who had led off the inning with a pinch-hit single.
Oregon State starter Mark McLemore (2-3) took the loss, allowing four runs and six hits in 2.2 innings.
Stanford moved back into a tie for fourth place with Oregon State in the Pac-10 standings at the midway mark of its conference schedule.
Stanford will travel to San Jose State for a non-conference game at Municipal Stadium on Tuesday, April 30 (7 pm, PT). The game will be televised on a tape-delayed basis by Silicon Valley Community Communications. The Cardinal returns to Pac-10 action by hosting local rival California in a three-game series next Friday-Sunday, May 3-5 (6 pm, 1 pm, 1 pm, PT).
