National Player of the Year candidate Jason Cooper continues to lead the team with a .366 batting average, 10 homers and 39 RBI despite not homering or a driving in a run for the past seven games and currently struggling without a hit in his last 13 at bats ... Chris O'Riordan (.360, 236-655) and Sam Fuld (.358, 147-411) are both making runs at Stanford's career batting average record (Jack Shepard, .362) ... O'Riordan has briefly risen above the .362 marks at times this year ... Fuld is making a run at it as the team's hottest hitter over the last nine games, going 21-for-38 (.553) with eight multiple-hit contests during the stretch to move into second this season with a .359 batting average ... STANFORD-SAN JOSE STATE PREVIEW AND HISTORY
Stanford and San Jose State will meet for the second time this season after the Cardinal squeezed out a 5-4 comeback victory in the first game between the clubs this season. Stanford has struggled with four losses in its last seven games, while San Jose State has won nine of its last 10 contests. Stanford is hitting .323, fielding at a .971 clip and has posted a 3.86 ERA. San Jose State is hitting .301 with a .975 fielding percentage and a 4.14 ERA. Stanford has won four straight games overall versus the Spartans with the last Spartan victory coming in a 4-1 win at Sunken Diamond on February 29, 2000. Last year, the Cardinal picked up a pair of narrow victories, winning 5-3 in 10 innings at San Jose State (4/3/01) and 4-3 at Stanford (4/24/01). Stanford leads the all-time series, 72-29.
A CLOSER LOOK AT 2002 STANFORD-SAN JOSE STATE GAMES
at Stanford 5, San Jose State 4 (April 9, 2002) - Stanford scored four times in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 5-4 comeback win over San Jose State. Jason Cooper hit a three-run homer to right field with two outs and Danny Putnam followed two batters later with a pinch-hit RBI double to score Carlos Quentin with the eventual game-winning run. Jonny Dyer picked up the victory and Darin Naatjes pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save. Three Stanford relievers - Mark Jecmen, Dyer and Naatjes - combined to hold the Spartans to one run and three hits over the final six innings. Travis Becktel (3-5, RBI) led the San Jose State offense and was the only player in the game with three or more hits. Hector Zamora (2-3, 2 2B), Adam Shorsher (2-4, RBI) and Kevin Frandsen (2-4) had two hits each for the Spartans. Quentin (2-4, HR, RBI) was the only Cardinal player with a multiple-hit game.

STANFORD-CALIFORNIA BASEBALL SERIES PREVIEW AND HISTORY
Stanford will host California in a three-game series this Friday-Sunday, May 3-5 (6 pm, 1 pm, 1 pm, PDT). Stanford is tied for fourth in the Pac-10 after dropping two-of-three games at Oregon State last Friday-Sunday. California (26-22, 8-10 Pac-10) is in sixth place in the conference standings after being swept by Washington last Friday-Sunday. Stanford won two-of-three games in a non-league series at California in the first meeting between the clubs this year (Friday-Sunday, March 8-10). Stanford scored 15 runs in the seventh and eighth innings of a 15-4 win in the series opener. California eeked out a 2-1 win in the middle game of the series and the Cardinal won the rubber game, 4-2. The teams split six games last season with the Cardinal winning two-of-three non-conference games at Sunken Diamond and California taking two-of-three conference games at Evans Diamond. Stanford leads the all-time series, 214-207.
A CLOSER LOOK AT 2002 STANFORD-CALIFORNIA GAMES
Stanford 4, at California 2 (March 10, 2002) - Stanford picked up a 4-2 victory over California to take of two-of-three games in the non-conference series and extend its regular season series win streak to eight. Jason Cooper hit his third home run of the series and extended his career-high hit streak to 11 games. John Hudgins (3-0) earned the victory by holding the Golden Bears to one run on six hits over the first 6.0 innings, while Darin Naatjes earned his first collegiate save by retiring the only batter he faced for the final out of the game. Arik VanZandt (2-3, 2 SB) and Sam Fuld (2-5) had a pair of hits each for the Cardinal, while David Weiner (2-4, 2B, RBI) was the only California player with more than one hit.

at California 2, Stanford 1 (March 9, 2002) - California scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and held on for a 2-1 upset victory over Stanford. Brian Montalbo held Stanford to one run on five hits through the first 7.1 innings to earn the victory and Matt Brown held the Cardinal scoreless on one hit over the final 1.2 innings to pick up his third save. Ben Conley (2-2, 2B, SB) had two of California's five hits. Tim Cunningham (4-1) had his 10-game win streak snapped, losing for the first time since May 28, 2000, despite holding the Golden Bears to two runs (one earned) and four hits over the first 7.0 innings. Chris O'Riordan (2-3) was the only Stanford player with more than one hit.

Stanford 15, at California 4 (March 8, 2002) - Stanford scored 15 runs in the seventh and eighth innings to rally for a 15-4 victory over California. Jason Cooper (5-5, 2 HR, 4 RBI) had the first two-homer game of his career and also had a career-high five hits to lead Stanford's 17-hit attack. Jeremy Guthrie picked up his 10th consecutive win on the mound dating back to last season, scattering five hits and four runs with six strikeouts over the first 7.0 innings. Stanford tied a season-high with four homers as Ryan Garko and Carlos Quentin also went deep. Garko (2-5, HR, 3 RBI) extended his hit streak to a season-high 10 games, while Quentin (2-4, 2B, HR, 3 RBI), Scott Dragicevich (2-4) and Sam Fuld (2-5, RBI) also had two hits each. Brian Horwitz (2-4, 2B) was the only California player with more than one hit.

2002 STANFORD-OREGON STATE GAME REVIEWS
Stanford 13, at Oregon State 0 (April 28, 2002) - John Hudgins tossed his first career shutout and Stanford picked up 19 hits in a 13-0 blowout victory over Oregon State to salvage the final game of a three-game series. Sam Fuld (4-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, SB) and Chris O'Riordan (4-6, 2B, HR, 3 RBI) led the Cardinal offense with four hits each. Fuld added a career-high five runs scored, the most runs scored by a Cardinal player in a game this season. Hudgins allowed just four hits and struck out five in pitching the first shutout of the season for the Cardinal. He retired 14 straight batters at one point from the third through the seventh innings. Ryan Garko (3-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI), Andy Topham (3-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI) and Scott Dragicevich (3-5) added three hits each for Stanford, who tied a season-high with seven doubles. Aaron Mathews (2-4) had half of Oregon State's four hits. Oregon State starter Mark McLemore (2-3) took the loss, allowing four runs and six hits in 2.2 innings.

at Oregon State 4, Stanford 3 (April 27, 2002) - Oregon State knocked off Stanford for the second straight day with a 4-3 victory as Aaron Mathews scored the game-winning run on a wild play in the bottom of the eighth inning. J.R. Runyon struck out on a wild pitch that moved runners to second and third base. Mathews scored when Stanford catcher Ryan Garko tried to throw Brian Barden out at second base and the ball skipped by Cardinal second baseman Chris O'Riordan. Ty Kline (5-0) picked up the victory, while Dan Rich (1-1) suffered the loss.

at Oregon State 3, Stanford 1 (April 26, 2002) - Ben Rowe tossed a complete game four-hitter as Oregon State shut down Stanford, 3-1. Jeremy Guthrie (6-1) had his 11-game win streak snapped despite tossing his first complete game of the season, scattering eight hits and three runs with five strikeouts. Ryan Garko's fourth inning solo homer gave the Cardinal a short-lived 1-0 lead. Garko (2-4, HR, RBI) had two of Stanford's season-low four hits. Biles (2-4, 2B) was the only Oregon State player with more than one hit. Chris O'Riordan had both his career-high hit (12) and on-base (38) streaks broken by going 0-for-4.

STANFORD FALLS FIVE SPOTS TO NO. 9 IN BASEBALL AMERICA POLL
Stanford fell five spots in this week's Baseball America poll released April 29 after dropping two-of-three games at Oregon State last Friday-Sunday. The Cardinal had been the nation's No. 4 team in all four major polls last week but also fell in this week's polls to No. 8 (Baseball Weekly/ESPN), No. 11 (Collegiate Baseball) and No. 9 (NCBWA). Stanford began the season as the nation's unanimous No. 1 team and stayed on top of the Baseball America poll for the first seven weeks of the season before finally falling out of the top spot for the first time on April 1. Stanford spent two weeks (4/9 - 4/16) last year as the nation's unanimous No. 1 team and six weeks as Baseball America's top team (3/12 - 4/16) before finishing the year at No. 2 in all four polls. Stanford has been ranked No. 1 at one point during each of the past six years (including 2002). Stanford's poll history includes a run as "king of the polls" in 1998 when the team held the top spot in the Baseball America poll for the entire regular season (a record 14 consecutive weeks). USC (No. 20 Baseball America, No. 19 Baseball Weekly/ESPN, No. 16 Collegiate Baseball, No. 23 NCBWA) and Arizona State (No. 24 Baseball Weekly/ESPN, No. 24 NCBWA) are the other ranked Pac-10 teams.
STANFORD DROPS SECOND STRAIGHT REGULAR SEASON SERIES
Stanford dropped its second straight regular season series by losing two-of-three games at Oregon State (4/26 - 4/28) last weekend after also losing two-of-three the previous weekend at Washington (4/19 - 4/21) to snap its regular season series win streak ended at 12. The Cardinal began the regular season win streak last year with series victories over Arizona (5/11 - 5/13/01) and at Washington State (5/18 - 5/20/01). This year, the Cardinal won its first 10 regular season series versus Cal State Fullerton (2/1 - 2/3), at Florida State (2/8 - 2/10), at Fresno State (2/15 - 2/18), versus Santa Clara (2/22 - 2/24), versus Cal Poly (3/1 - 3/3), at California (3/8 - 3/10), at USC (3/23 - 3/24), versus Texas (3/28 - 3/30), at Arizona (4/5 - 4/7) and versus USC (4/12 - 4/14). Stanford had three sweeps (5/11 - 5/13/01 Arizona series, Cal Poly, 3/23 - 3/24/02 USC series) during the stretch and won two-of-three games in the other nine series. Stanford has also won 29 of its last 33 regular season series.
CARDINAL DROPS FIRST TWO SERIES OPENERS OF SEASON
Stanford has lost its last two series openers at Washington (4/19, 3-1) and at Oregon State (4/26, 3-1). WINNING THE CLOSE ONES
Stanford has been successful in one-run games and extra-inning contests this season. The Cardinal has posted an 8-4 record in one-run games and a 4-2 mark in extra-inning contests.
APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY FLOWERS
For the second consecutive season, the Cardinal has struggled in the second half of April. Last year, the team struggled to a 3-5 record during its eight games in the second half of the month. This year, the team finished at 4-4. The month of May was much better to the Cardinal last season when the club posted a 12-3 record.
TOP OF THE PAC
Stanford is trying to keep alive its string of eight consecutive finishes among the top two in the Pac-10 standings (includes Pac-10 Southern Division). The Cardinal has also finished either first or second in the league standings 19 times over the last 21 years with the only blemishes over that time period a fourth place finish in 1989 and a sixth place showing in 1993. With a current 6-6 conference record, Stanford is 2.0 games behind Washington (8-4 Pac-10) in second place and 3.5 games behind league leader USC (11-4 Pac-10).
ONE MORE WIN FOR 30 AND ANOTHER WINNING SEASON
Stanford needs just one more win to reach the 30-victory mark and guarantee a winning season for the ninth straight year. The last time the Cardinal didn't win 30 games and didn't have a winning season was when the club finished 27-28 in 1993. In fact, it's a rarity when the Cardinal doesn't reach 30 wins or have a winning season. Stanford has 30 or more wins 23 times in 25 years with Mark Marquess as coach and has posted 24 winning seasons during that time.

Stanford has trailed before coming back to win in 14 of its 29 victories this season -- (vs. Cal State Fullerton, 2/1, 2/2; at Florida State, 2/9, vs. Santa Clara, 2/22, 2/24; at Cal, 3/8, vs. Texas, 3/28; at Arizona, 4/5; at USC, 3/23 - Game 1; vs. San Jose State, 4/9; vs. USC, 4/11; vs. Saint Mary's, 4/16; at Washington, 4/20; vs. Sacramento State, 4/24).
PERFECT 5-0 IN MIDWEEK NON-CONFERENCE GAMES
Stanford has posted a perfect 5-0 record in midweek non-conference games this season. The Cardinal has knocked off Brigham Young (2/12, 8-1), USF (4/2, 4-1), San Jose State (4/9, 5-4), Saint Mary's (4/16, 19-2) and Sacramento State (4/24, 6-5) this year.
OFFENSE BREAKS OUT IN SERIES FINALE AT OREGON STATE
After hitting .180 with just seven hits combined in the first two games of the series at Oregon State, Stanford broke out for 19 hits in a 13-0 victory over the Beavers in the series finale. Sam Fuld (4-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, SB, career-high five runs) and Chris O'Riordan (4-6, 2B, HR, 3 RBI) led five Stanford players with three or more hits. Ryan Garko (3-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI), Andy Topham (3-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI) and Scott Dragicevich (3-5) added three hits each.
JOHN HUDGINS TOSSES FIRST CAREER SHUTOUT TO IMPROVE TO 7-0
John Hudgins tossed his first career shutout and the first by a Stanford player this season in a 13-0 Cardinal win at Oregon State last Sunday (4/28). Hudgins allowed just four hits and struck out five, retiring 14 consecutive batters at one point. Hudgins improved to 7-0 with the victory and has two of Stanford's three complete games this season.
CHRIS O'RIORDAN SECOND ON CAREER BATTING AVERAGE LIST
Chris O'Riordan currently sits in second place on Stanford's career batting average list (.360, 236-655), .002 percentage points behind all-time leader Jack Shepard (.362).
CHRIS O'RIORDAN HAS TWO LONG STREAKS SNAPPED
Chris O'Riordan had both his career-high hit streak (12 games, 4/5 - 4/21) and his on-base streak (38 games, 2/1 - 4/21) snapped when he went 0-for-4 without reaching base in the series opener at Oregon State (4/26). O'Riordan was 23-for-55 (.418) with two doubles, three homers, 12 RBI and two stolen bases during the 12-game hit streak. O'Riordan did extend his string of consecutive games started at second base to 152 by starting in all three games of the Oregon State series (4/26 - 4/28).
CHRIS O'RIORDAN LEADING CARDINAL IN PAC-10 PLAY
Chris O'Riordan has been Stanford's top hitter among regulars in Pac-10 action with a .407 batting average (22-54) in 12 Pac-10 games. O'Riordan has also contributed three doubles, four homers, 10 RBI, three stolen bases and 11 runs scored.
SAM FULD JUMPS TO FOURTH-PLACE TIE ON CAREER BATTING AVERAGE LIST
Sam Fuld has moved all the way up Stanford's career batting average list into a fourth-place tie (.358, 147-411) after going 21-for-38 (.553) with eight multiple-hit contests in the last nine games.
JEREMY GUTHRIE HAS 11-GAME WIN STREAK SNAPPED
Jeremy Guthrie had his 11-game win streak snapped when he took the loss at Oregon State (4/26) in a 3-1 Beaver victory despite tossing his first complete game of the season. The loss was his first since being defeated at Sacramento State nearly a year ago on May 2, 2001. Guthrie won his last five decisions last year over Arizona (5/11/01), Washington State (5/18/01), Marist (5/25/01), South Carolina (6/1/01) and Cal State Fullerton (6/13/01). This year, he won his first six decisions against Cal State Fullerton (2/1), Florida State (2/8), Fresno State (2/15), Cal Poly (3/1), California (3/8) and USC (3/23). He also had five no decisions during the stretch that lasted for a total of 16 starts.
REGULAR STARTING PITCHING ROTATION NOW 18-3 WITH 3.59 ERA
Stanford's regular starting pitching rotation of Jeremy Guthrie (6-1, 2.89, 87.1 IP, 78 SO), Tim Cunningham (5-2, 4.08, 70.2 IP, 43 SO) and John Hudgins (7-0, 4.01, 67.1 IP, 46 SO) is now a combined 18-3 with a 3.59 ERA this season.
PERFECT ON THE PATHS
Stanford has four players with more than five stolen bases who have combined to be a perfect 28-for-28 in stolen base attempts this season. Brian Hall (9-9) leads the way, followed by Arik VanZandt (7-7), Andy Topham (6-6) and Donny Lucy (6-6). As a team, the Cardinal has been successful in 48-of-61 (.787) stolen base attempts.

STANFORD BASEBALL HISTORY
Stanford's storied baseball program has had many highlights as the program is in its 109th season with an all-time record of 2308-1460-32 (.612). The Cardinal won NCAA titles in 1987 and 1988 before returning to the CWS championship game in each of the last two years (2000, 2001). The program has had winning seasons in 36 of its last 37 campaigns (also 53 of the last 55), has recorded three straight 50-win seasons for the first time in school history (1999-2001) and reached the 40-win mark in seven consecutive campaigns (1995-2001). Just a few of the other highlights have included 13 College World Series appearances, 18 conference titles and 22 NCAA Tournament berths. Stanford has boasted a total of 43 All-Americans who have earned a total of 50 All-American honors. Stanford has also garnered three NCAA Player of the Year choices in Jeff Austin (1998), David McCarty (1991) and Steve Dunning (1970). Other numbers for the Cardinal Baseball program include 96 All-Conference players earning a total of 121 All-Conference honors, 57 major league players and 12 first round draft picks in the last 15 years.
OFFENSIVE REPORT
Stanford's team batting average currently sits at .323, .014 percentage points lower than its school record of .337 set in 1981. The team's batting average has been at .315 or higher all season. Stanford has its mark from a season-low .315 after a game at Arizona (4/5) with 12 or more hits in 10 of its last 15 games. The recent surge has included a pair of season-high-tying 19-run games in a 19-2 win versus Saint Mary's (4/16) and a 19-1 win at Arizona (4/6) with a season-high 26 hits in the latter. Stanford's ERA currently sits at 3.86 through its first 41 games, just 0.36 higher than last year's final 3.50 mark. Stanford's regular starting rotation of Jeremy Guthrie (6-1, 2.89, 87.1 IP, 78 SO), Tim Cunningham (5-2, 4.08, 70.2 IP, 43 SO) and John Hudgins (7-0, 4.01, 67.1 IP, 46 SO) is a combined 18-3 with a 3.59 ERA. Hudgins leads the team in victories, while Guthrie paces the club in innings pitched and strikeouts. Hudgins has two of the squad's three complete games in victories versus Texas (3/30) and at Oregon State (4/28) with his first career shutout and the team's only shutout in the latter. Guthrie has the team's other complete game in a loss at Oregon State (4/26) and has the team's longest performance of the year with a career-high 10.0 innings pitched at Arizona (4/5) in an eventual 18-inning Stanford win. Stanford's fielding percentage currently sits at .971, its highest mark since the club was at .974 following the fifth game of the season and just .006 below last year's .977 school record and nation's best mark. Stanford has been errorless in five of its last 10 games and a total of 14 games this year. Ryan Garko leads the club with 257 putouts, while Chris O'Riordan has a team-high 144 assists. STANFORD HEAD COACH MARK MARQUESS
One of the nation's premier collegiate coaches, Mark Marquess is in his 26th season at the helm of Stanford Baseball in 2002. Marquess has a career record of 1075-527-5 (.670), all at Stanford. Marquess coached his 1600th game at Stanford last week in a 19-2 win over Saint Mary's (4/16). Last year, he became the 23rd coach in the history of NCAA Division I baseball to reach the 1000-win mark with a 6-2 victory over Florida State in a game played on February 9, 2001. The 1969 Stanford graduate has led the Cardinal to two NCAA titles (1987, '88) and two other CWS title game appearances (2000, '01), as well as 11 College World Series appearances (1982, '83, '85, '87, '88, '90, '95, '97, '99, 2000, '01), 11 NCAA Regional titles (1982, '83, '85, '87, '88, '90, '95, '97, '99, 2000, '01), 10 Pac-10 or Pac-10 Southern Division regular season titles (1983, '84, '85, '87, '90, '94, '97, '98, '99, 2000) and three NCAA Super Regional championships (1999, 2000, '01). The Cardinal has qualified for the NCAA Tournament 19 times under Marquess. He began the 2002 season ranked 12th in victories and 16th in winning percentage among active Division I baseball coaches, while ranking 23rd on the all-time victory list and 42nd on the all-time winning percentage list. He has been named NCAA Coach of the Year three times (1985, '87, '88) and has received Pac-10 or Pac-10 Southern Division Coach of the Year honors on eight occasions (1983, '85, '87, '90, '94, '97, '98, '99). The Cardinal has suffered just one losing season during his tenure and has finished either first or second in the prestigious Pacific-10 (formerly Pac-10 Southern Division) 19 times in the last 21 seasons. Stanford has had 99 professional baseball draft picks in the past 17 seasons, including 12 first round selections in the last 15 years. A member of the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Marquess was the head coach of the 1988 United States Olympic baseball team that captured the gold medal. Marquess was also an accomplished football and baseball standout on The Farm and is a member of the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame. He is one of only six collegiate baseball head coaches to have both played and coached in the College World Series. Marquess was the starting first baseman and a First Team All-American on Stanford's 1967 College World Series squad and played four seasons of minor league baseball with the Chicago White Sox organization.

STANFORD COACHING STAFF
Dean Stotz is in his 26th campaign with Stanford Baseball and his third season as associate head coach after he was promoted to the position prior to the 2000 campaign. Stotz served for 23 years as an assistant. Stotz currently coaches third base while also handling various offensive and defensive aspects of the game. Tom Kunis (3rd season) handles the Cardinal pitching staff, while Dave Nakama (3rd season) returns as an assistant coach after three seasons as the head coach at San Francisco State. Nakama, also a Cardinal assistant in 1997 and 1998, assists with all aspects of the game and serves as Stanford's first base coach.
