Women's Tennis Rolls Over No. 13 USC, 6-1

April 5, 2002

STANFORD, Calif. - Fourth-ranked Stanford University (17-1) posted its second win over a top 25 opponent in three days with a 6-1 home win over USC (14-5) on Friday afternoon at the Taube Tennis Center. The Cardinal also defeated No. 21 California 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon on The Farm.

After a 30-minute rain delay pushed back the start of the match until 2:00 p.m., the Cardinal came out and won all three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches to extend its winning streak to 12 and improve to 8-0 at home this season.

The top two doubles matches featured four of the top 20 ranked teams in the nation. At No. 1, Stanford's second-ranked duo of Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, FL) and Gabriela Lastra (Reno, NV) topped fourth-ranked Tiffany Brymer (Apple Valley, CA) and Jewel Peterson (College Park, GA) 8-6. At No. 2, 14th-ranked Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, NJ) and Erin Burdette (Jackson, GA) beat 19th-ranked Anita Loyola (Tucson, AZ) and Luana Magnani (Pasadena, CA) 8-6.

Stanford then wrapped up the victory by winning the Nos. 3, 5 and 6 singles matches by identical 6-2, 6-2 scores. Senior Keika Tokuda (Clifton, NJ) wrapped up her win first at No. 5, and was followed by Emilia Anderson (Cincinnati, OH) at No. 6 and Barnikow's clinching victory at No. 3.

The Cardinal also received three-set victories from Lastra at No. 2 and Burdette at No.4.

USC's victory came at No. 1 singles, as Peterson prevailed in three sets.

The Cardinal concludes ZOOM Marketing's "Stanford Spring Smash" on Saturday when it hosts No. 7 UCLA at noon. USC will travel across the Bay to face California on Saturday at noon. This weekend's matches do not count in the Pac-10 standings.
