STANFORD, Calif. - Fourth-ranked Stanford University (18-1) swept all six singles matches to post a 6-1 home win over seventh-ranked UCLA (13-3) on Saturday afternoon at the Taube Tennis Center. The match does not count in the Pacific-10 Conference standings.
The Bruins opened the dual by winning two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Stanford's doubles victory came at No. 1 where second-ranked Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, FL) and Gabriela Lastra (Reno, NV) defeated third-ranked Petya Marinova (Mississauga, Canada) and Sara Walker (El Paso, TX) 8-4.
Stanford then swept all six singles matches, including three straight set victories.
The Cardinal pulled off impressive victories at Nos. 1 and 2, where Kalvaria and Lastra both defeated opponents that are ranked in the top seven in the nation. The 10th-ranked Kalvaria outlasted fouth-ranked Megan Bradley (Columbia, MO) 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 1, and the 18th-ranked Lastra soundly defeated the seventh-ranked Walker 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2.
Stanford also received singles victories from Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, NJ), Erin Burdette (Jackson, GA), Keiko Tokuda (Clifton, NJ) and Emilia Anderson (Cincinnati, OH).
The Cardinal (4-0 Pac-10) continues this five-match homestand on Friday when it hosts No. 34 Arizona (10-8, 3-5) at 1:30 p.m. in conference action at the Taube Tennis Center. UCLA hosts No. 28 Washington State (9-8, 1-4) on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
