San Jose, Calif. - San Jose State (36-13) scored seven runs in the first two innings and rolled to a 12-0 victory over No. 9 Stanford (29-13) in a non-conference game at Municipal Stadium on Wednesday. The Spartans ended a four-game losing streak against Stanford dating back to the 2000 season and avenged a 5-4 loss earlier this season to the Cardinal at Sunken Diamond. San Jose State also won for the 10th time in its last 11 games, while Stanford fell for third time in its last four contests with its most lopsided loss since the Cardinal also fell by 12 runs at Florida State (13-1) on February 13, 2000.
Dino Quintero (3-5) and Nathan Corrick (3-5) had three hits each to lead a 15-hit Spartan attack. Adam Shorsher (2-4, 2B, 3 RBI), Gabe Lopez (2-5, RBI) and Kevin Frandsen (2-4, RBI) added two hits apiece, while Hector Zamora drove in three runs and Anthony Contreras picked up a pair of RBI. Bryan Baker also hit his ninth homer of the season, a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Jeremy Rogelstad (7-4) earned the victory by limiting the Cardinal to six hits and tossing only the second shutout versus the Cardinal this season. Rogelstad struck out six, walked only one and did not allow a Cardinal runner past first base after the first inning. Rogelstad benefited from three double plays, including one for the final two outs of the game.Sam Fuld (2-3) led the Stanford offense with his ninth multiple-hit game in the last 10 contests and was the only Cardinal player with more than one hit.
Stanford starter Mark Jecmen (0-4) suffered the loss, giving up four runs and four hits before being removed with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. Jecmen was the first of eight Stanford pitchers used in the game.
The Spartans picked up three consecutive singles by Quintero, Corrick and Lopez to score their first run of the game. Zamora followed with a sacrifice fly to make the score 2-0 and the final two runs of the inning scored on a two-RBI single by Contreras.
Quintero and Corrick also started San Jose State's three-run second inning with back-to-back singles before both scoring on a ground ball by Zamora that Stanford second baseman Chris O'Riordan skipped by Cardinal first baseman Donny Lucy for an error. Zamora was credited with one RBI on the play. Frandsen brought home the final Spartan run of the inning with a two-out RBI single to score Zamora.
San Jose State added a run in the bottom of the fourth on Baker's solo homer to increase its lead to 8-0.
The Spartans made the score 10-0 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Lopez led off the inning with a single and scored on an RBI double from Zamora. A two-out RBI double from Shorsher scored Zamora.
San Jose State finished its scoring with two runs in the bottom of the eighth as Shorsher drove home both runs with a two-RBI single.
San Jose State stranded nine runners, while the Cardinal left five on base.
Stanford, which lost a non-conference midweek game for the first time in six games on Wednesday, returns to Pac-10 action by hosting local rival California in a three-game series this Friday-Sunday, May 3-5 (6 pm, 1 pm, 1 pm, PT). Stanford is currently in a fourth place tie in the Pac-10 standings with a 6-6 conference record, while the Golden Bears are in sixth place with an 8-10 league mark.
