Stanford continues its three-game series against California on Saturday (1 pm, PDT) after winning the series opener, 8-4, on Friday as Jeremy Guthrie tossed a complete game six-hitter and struck out a season-high 10 batters, while Sam Fuld (3-4, HR, 2 RBI, SB) and Scott Dragicevich (3-4, 2 2B) had three hits each and Carlos Quentin (2-4, HR, 3 RBI, SB) homered and drove in three runs ... The victory was Stanford's 11th in 13 series openers this season ... The Cardinal is 6-6 in middle games of series and 8-4 in series finales ... Stanford also improved its home record to 17-3 ... Stanford is currently ranked No. 9 in the most recent Baseball America poll ... Sam Fuld now leads the Cardinal with a .372 batting average after multiple-hit games in 10 of his last 11 contests, going 26-for-45 (.578) over the stretch ... Fuld also paces the club in hits (71) and has moved into the top spot on Stanford's all-time batting average list with a .364 lifetime mark ... Jason Cooper continues to lead the in homers (10) and RBI (40) ... Chris O'Riordan (.360, 238-662) is also making a run at Stanford's career batting average record ... O'Riordan is third among regulars with a .352 batting average, while leading the team in on base percentage (.435) ... Ryan Garko leads the club in runs scored (48) and bases on balls (25) ... Brian Hall paces the team with nine stolen bases in nine chances ... Stanford's regular starting rotation of Jeremy Guthrie, Tim Cunningham and John Hudgins is a combined 19-3 with a 3.59 ERA ... Hudgins tossed his first career shutout and the first by a Stanford pitcher this year in his last outing, a 13-0 win at Oregon State (4/28).
STANFORD-CALIFORNIA BASEBALL SERIES NOTES AND HISTORY
Stanford and California continue their series Saturday-Sunday, May 4-5 (1 pm, 1 pm, PDT) after the Cardinal won Friday night's series opener, 8-4. Stanford is tied for fourth in the Pac-10 with Oregon State as both clubs have 7-6 Pac-10 marks and are 3.0 games behind league leader USC (11-4 Pac-10). California (8-11 Pac-10) fell to seventh place in the conference standings after Friday night's loss and has dropped five straight overall. Stanford won two-of-three games in a non-league series at California in the first series between the clubs this year (Friday-Sunday, March 8-10). Stanford scored 15 runs in the seventh and eighth innings of a 15-4 win in the series opener. California eeked out a 2-1 win in the middle game of the series and the Cardinal won the rubber game, 4-2. The teams split six games last season with the Cardinal winning two-of-three non-conference games at Sunken Diamond and California taking two-of-three conference games at Evans Diamond. Stanford leads the all-time series, 215-207.
FRIDAY NIGHT GAME REVIEW
at Stanford 8, at California 4 (May 3, 2002) - Jeremy Guthrie tossed a complete game six-hitter and struck out a season-high 10 batters to lead Stanford to an 8-4 victory over California. Guthrie gave up only one hit after the fourth inning, a bunt single by David Horwitz with one out in the top of the ninth. Sam Fuld (3-4, HR, SB, 3 RBI) and Scott Dragicevich (3-4, 2 2B) had three hits each, while Carlos Quentin (2-4, HR, 3 RBI, SB) homered and drove in three runs to lead the Cardinal offense. Horwitz (3-4, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI) had half of California's six hits, while David Nicholson (2-2, SB) added a pair of hits. California reliever Matt Payne (3-2) suffered the loss, giving up three runs and five hits in 2.1 innings as the second of four California pitchers.
