STANFORD-ARIZONA STATE BASEBALL SERIES PREVIEW AND HISTORY
Stanford will host Arizona State in a key Pac-10 three-game series this Friday-Sunday, May 10-12 (6 pm, 1 pm, 1 pm, PDT). The Cardinal and the Sun Devils both enter the series tied for third place in the Pac-10 with 9-6 conference marks. Stanford swept California in its most recent Pac-10 series last Friday-Sunday and has won four in a row overall. Arizona State hasn't played a game since April 30 and has been out of Pac-10 action for the last two weekends after dropping two-of-three to California April 19-21. The Sun Devils have won two-of-three games since with wins at Oklahoma and versus New Mexico State sandwiching a loss to Notre Dame. Stanford won two-of-three games the last time the teams met in Tempe last season, winning the first two games (6-2, 5-2) before dropping the series finale (6-5). The teams last played at Sunken Diamond in 1999 (March 5-7) when the Cardinal swept the Sun Devils (11-1, 6-5, 11-8). Arizona State leads the all-time series, 75-74.
A CLOSER LOOK AT 2001 STANFORD-ARIZONA STATE GAMES
at Arizona State 6, Stanford 5 (April 1, 2001) - Arizona State snapped Stanford's 10-game win streak and sent the Cardinal to its first Pac-10 defeat of the season with a 6-5 victory. The 10-game win streak had been Stanford's longest since the club won 11 in a row from May 16 - June 14, 1999. Andy Torres earned the win, limiting the Cardinal to one run and one hit in 3.0 innings of relief. Drew Friedberg pitched the final 1.2 innings for the save. John Hudgins took the loss as he was touched for two runs and three hits. Casey Myers (3-4, HR, 3 RBI), Rod Allen (3-4, 2B, RBI) and Dennis Wyrick (2-2, 2B, RBI) led ASU's offensive attack. Carlos Quentin (2-3, HR, RBI) was the only Cardinal with more than one hit, while Andy Topham had a pair of RBI.

Stanford 5, at Arizona State 2 (March 31, 2001) - Stanford extended its season-high win streak to 10 games with a 5-2 victory at Arizona State. Stanford led just 1-0 before scoring four runs in the top of the ninth inning. Jeff Bruksch won for the sixth time in seven starts, shutting out the Sun Devils for the first eight innings before giving up a pair of ninth inning runs. Mike Wodnicki came on to record the save. Jon Switzer took the loss despite holding the Cardinal to one run and three hits through the first 8.0 innings before being charged with three runs in the ninth. Jonah Martin (2-3) led the Arizona State offense and was the only player from either team with more than one hit.

Stanford 6, at Arizona State 2 (March 30, 2001) - Jeremy Guthrie won his seventh consecutive start as the Cardinal defeated Arizona State, 7-2. Guthrie scattered three hits and two runs with four strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Sam Fuld (2-3, SB), Jason VanMeetren (2-4, 3B, 2 RBI) and Andy Topham (2-5, 2B, RBI, SB) had two hits each for the Cardinal, while Dennis Wyrick (2-4, 2B) was the only Arizona State player with more than one hit. Mike Esposito suffered the loss, giving up five runs on eight hits over the first 6.0 innings.

TUESDAY'S STANFORD-SANTA CLARA GAME REVIEW
Stanford 13, at Santa Clara 2 (May 7, 2002) - Ryan Garko had the first two-homer game of his career and tied a career-high with four runs scored to lead Stanford to a 13-2 victory over Santa Clara. Garko now has 11 homers this season, taking over the team lead. Stanford extended its win streak to four games and won three of four games in its season series against the Broncos. Six other Stanford hitters - Jason Cooper (2-3, 3B, 3 RBI, SB), Carlos Quentin (2-3, RBI, SB), Brian Hall (2-3, RBI, SB), Andy Topham (2-4, RBI, SB), Arik VanZandt (2-4, 2B, RBI) and Sam Fuld (2-6, HR, 2 RBI, SB) - had two hits each. Stanford tied a season-high with five stolen bases. Darin Naatjes picked up the win as the first of four Cardinal pitchers. A.J. LaBarbera (2-3) and Jim Wallace (2-4, 2B) had two hits each for the Broncos, while Joey Gomes hit his 28th double of the season in the bottom of the ninth inning.

LAST WEEK'S STANFORD-CALIFORNIA GAME REVIEWS
at Stanford 8, California 5 (May 5, 2002) - Stanford completed a three-game sweep of California with an 8-5 victory in front of a season-high 4,143 fans at Sunken Diamond. John Hudgins (8-0) remained unbeaten by scattering nine hits and five runs over the first 6.0 innings, while solo homers from Sam Fuld, Scott Dragicevich and Arik VanZandt sparked the Cardinal offense. Fuld (2-3, HR, RBI, 2 SB) continued a torrid stretch of hitting with his 12th multiple-hit game in the last 13 contests, going 30-for-53 (.566) over the stretch. California also had three solo homers in the contest as Nick Medrano, Conor Jackson and Justin Nelson cleared the fences. John Baker (2-3, 2B, RBI), Nelson (2-4, HR, RBI), Carson White (2-4, 2B, SB) and Brian Horwitz (2-5, RBI) each had two hits as the Golden Bears outhit the Cardinal, 11-7. Ryan McCally came on in the top of the eighth inning and pitched 2.0 scoreless frames to record his sixth save of the season.

at Stanford 13, California 6 (May 4, 2002) - Scott Dragicevich and Ryan Garko each drove in a career-high four runs to lead Stanford to a 13-6 comeback victory over California. Dragicevich blasted his first career grand slam and his first home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth inning, following a three-run homer hit by Garko earlier in the frame as the Cardinal scored seven times to erase a 4-0 California lead. Stanford added six runs in the eighth inning.

Guthrie gave up only one hit after the fourth inning, while Sam Fuld (3-4, HR, SB, 3 RBI) and Scott Dragicevich (3-4, 2 2B) had three hits each. Brian Horwitz (3-4, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI) had half of California's six hits. California reliever Matt Payne (3-2) suffered the loss.

STANFORD JUMPS TWO SPOTS TO NO. 7 IN BASEBALL AMERICA POLL
Stanford jumped two spots to No. 7 in this week's Baseball America poll released May 6 after sweeping California in a three-game series last weekend. Stanford had fallen four spots to a season-low No. 9 in the previous Baseball America poll after dropping two-of-three games in back-to-back series at Washington and Oregon State the previous two weekends. Stanford currently ranks No. 7 (Baseball Weekly/ESPN) and No. 9 (Collegiate Baseball, NCBWA) in the three other major national polls. Stanford began the season as the nation's unanimous No. 1 team and stayed on top of the Baseball America poll for the first seven weeks of the year before falling out of the top spot for the first time on April 1. Stanford spent two weeks (4/9 - 4/16) last year as the nation's unanimous No. 1 team and six weeks as Baseball America's top team (3/12 - 4/16) before finishing the year at No. 2 in all four polls. Stanford has been ranked No. 1 at one point during each of the past six years (including 2002). Stanford's poll history includes a run as "king of the polls" in 1998 when the team held the top spot in the Baseball America poll for the entire regular season (a record 14 consecutive weeks). USC (No. 20 Baseball America, No. 25 Baseball Weekly/ESPN, No. 18 Collegiate Baseball, No. 23 NCBWA), Arizona State (No. 19 Baseball Weekly/ESPN, No. 24 NCBWA) and Oregon State (No. 35 NCBWA) are the other ranked Pac-10 teams.
APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY FLOWERS
For the second consecutive season, the Cardinal struggled in the second half of April before playing well in May. Last year, the team struggled to a 3-5 record during its eight games in the second half of April before going 12-3 in May. This year, the team finished at 4-4 after the tax deadline and is 4-1 in its first five games of May.
TOP OF THE PAC
Stanford is currently in a third place tie in the Pac-10 standings and trying to keep alive its string of eight consecutive finishes among the top two in the conference standings (includes Pac-10 Southern Division). The Cardinal is attempting to finish either first or second in the league standings for the 20th time in the last 22 years with the only blemishes over that time period a fourth place finish in 1989 and a sixth place showing in 1993. With a current 9-6 conference record, Stanford is 2.0 games behind league leader USC (11-4 Pac-10 and 1.0 games behind second place Washington (10-5 Pac-10). Arizona State and Oregon State are both tied for third place with the Cardinal with 9-6 league marks.
CARDINAL PICKS UP 30TH WIN, SHOOTING FOR EIGHTH STRAIGHT 40-WIN SEASON
Stanford picked up its 30th win of the season with an 8-4 victory over California last Friday (5/3) and also guaranteed itself of a winning season for the ninth straight year with the victory. Stanford has also moved within seven victories of its eighth straight 40-win season. The last time the Cardinal didn't win 30 games and didn't have a winning season was when the club finished 27-28 in 1993. In fact, it's a rarity when the Cardinal doesn't reach 30 wins or have a winning season. Stanford has 30 or more wins 24 times in 26 years with Mark Marquess as coach and has posted 25 winning seasons during that time.
WINNING THE CLOSE ONES
Stanford has been successful in one-run games and extra-inning contests this season. The Cardinal has posted an 8-4 record in one-run games and a 4-2 mark in extra-inning contests.

CARDINAL 6-1 IN MIDWEEK GAMES
Stanford has won six of its first seven midweek non-conference games versus Brigham Young (2/12, 8-1), USF (4/2, 4-1), San Jose State (4/9, 5-4), Saint Mary's (4/16, 19-2) and Sacramento State (4/24, 6-5), as well as at Santa Clara (5/7, 13-2). Stanford's only midweek non-conference was a 12-0 loss at San Jose State (4/30). Stanford is scheduled to play its final midweek non-conference game at Nevada next Tuesday, May 14 (2 pm, PDT).
SLAMMIN' SAMMY ON A TEAR
Sam Fuld has moved to the top of Stanford's career batting average list with a .366 lifetime mark (158-432). Fuld is on amazing extended hot streak with seven straight multiple-hit games and 13 multiple-hit games in his last 14 contests as he is hitting .544 (32-59) with four homers, 13 RBI and seven stolen bases during the stretch. He leads the club with a .376 batting average (#6 Pac-10), 77 hits (#2 Pac-10), 13 doubles, 205 at bats, 27 multiple-hit games, eight three-hit games and three four-hit games.
RYAN GARKO TEAM HOMER RUN LEADER AFTER FIRST TWO-HOMER GAME
Ryan Garko has moved into the team lead for home runs with 11 after hitting two homers in a game for the first time in his career in a 13-2 win at Santa Clara (5/7).
MIDDLE OF THE LINEUP PRODUCING RUNS
Stanford's 3-4-5 hitters Ryan Garko, Jason Cooper and Carlos Quentin have combined to drive in 130 runs in 46 games this season. Quentin currently leads the group with 45 RBI, while Cooper (43) and Garko (42) are close behind.
CHRIS O'RIORDAN TIED FOR FIFTH ON CAREER BATTING AVERAGE LIST
Chris O'Riordan currently ranks tied for fifth on Stanford's career batting average list. O'Riordan has a career batting average of .356 (240-675).
JEREMY GUTHRIE TOSSES SECOND STRAIGHT COMPLETE GAME
Jeremy Guthrie tossed his second straight complete game and struck out a season-high 10 batters in Stanford's 8-4 win over California last Friday (5/3). Guthrie has now won 12 of his last 13 decisions. He had won 11 straight decisions before taking the loss despite throwing his first complete game of the season in a 3-1 loss at Oregon State (4/26).
JOHN HUDGINS IMPROVES TO 8-0
John Hudgins improved to 8-0 by scattering nine hits and five runs in 6.0 innings to pick up the victory in an 8-5 win over California last Sunday (5/5). Hudgins has won seven of his nine starts and has one victory in relief. He also has the team's only shutout of the year in a 13-0 win at Oregon State (4/28) and two of the team's four complete games.
CHRIS O'RIORDAN EXTENDS GAMES STARTED STREAK TO 157
Chris O'Riordan has extended his string of consecutive games started at second base to 157. O'Riordan also had a couple of other notable streaks earlier this season, hitting safely in a career-high 12 straight games (4/5 - 4/21) and reaching base in 38 straight contests (2/1 - 4/21) before having both streaks snapped when he went 0-for-4 without reaching base in the series opener at Oregon State (4/26).
SAM FULD LEADING CARDINAL IN PAC-10 PLAY
Sam Fuld has been Stanford's top hitter among regulars in Pac-10 action with a .394 batting average (26-66) in 15 Pac-10 games. Fuld also leads the team in hits (26), runs scored (22) and stolen bases (7) during conference action, while co-leading the club in homers (4) and RBI (17).

RUNNING OVER THE OPPOSITION
Stanford tied a season-high with five stolen bases in a 13-2 win at Santa Clara (5/7) in its most recent game. The Cardinal has stolen nine base in the last four games and has more than doubled its opponents stolen base total this season with 57 thefts compared to 27 for its opponents. Brian Hall leads the club with 10 stolen bases and is a perfect 10-for-10 this season. Carlos Quentin (9), Sam Fuld (8), Arik VanZandt (7), Andy Topham (7) and Donny Lucy (6) all have six or more stolen bases to their credit.

Stanford's first and only losing streak of the year came when the Cardinal dropped the first two games at Oregon State (4/26 - 4/27). The Cardinal snapped out of the streak with a 13-0 win at Oregon State (4/28) in the series finale and have won five of the six games since the two consecutive losses.
STANFORD SETS NEW SEASON-HIGH ATTENDANCE RECORD
The big crowds at Sunken Diamond this year continued and reached a new level when the Cardinal drew a season-high 4143 fans for its series finale versus California last Sunday (5/5). Stanford is averaging 2612 fans per game through its first 22 home contests this season an increase of 610 fans per game to its average of 2012 fans through 22 games last year.

Jason Cooper earned NCBWA National Player of the Week (4/16) and Pac-10 Player of the Week (4/15) honors after hitting four homers and driving in 10 runs in four games ... Carlos Quentin set a new NCAA Division I single game record when he was hit by five pitches at Florida State (2/9) ... Stanford has outscored its opponents in every inning this season.
STANFORD BASEBALL HISTORY
Stanford's storied baseball program has had many highlights as the program is in its 109th season with an all-time record of 2312-1461-32 (.612). The Cardinal won NCAA titles in 1987 and 1988 before returning to the CWS championship game in each of the last two years (2000, 2001). The program has had winning seasons in 37 of its last 38 campaigns and 54 of its last 56 seasons (including this year), has recorded three straight 50-win seasons for the first time in school history (1999-2001) and has reached the 40-win mark in seven consecutive campaigns (1995-2001). Just a few of the other highlights have included 13 College World Series appearances, 18 conference titles and 22 NCAA Tournament berths. Stanford has boasted a total of 43 All-Americans who have earned a total of 50 All-American honors. Stanford has also garnered three NCAA Player of the Year choices in Jeff Austin (1998), David McCarty (1991) and Steve Dunning (1970). Other numbers for the Cardinal Baseball program include 96 All-Conference players earning a total of 121 All-Conference honors, 57 major league players and 12 first round draft picks in the last 15 years.
OFFENSIVE REPORT
Stanford's team batting average currently sits at .324, .013 percentage points lower than its school record of .337 set in 1981. The team's batting average has been at .315 or higher all season. Stanford has raised its mark from a season-low .315 after a game at Arizona (4/5) with 12 or more hits in 13 of its last 20 games. Stanford has had a pair of season-high-tying 19-run games in a 19-2 win versus Saint Mary's (4/16) and a 19-1 win at Arizona (4/6) with a season-high 26 hits in the latter. Stanford has scored double-digit runs 14 times and is averaging 8.2 runs per game. The team also has double-digit hits in 31 of its first 46 games. The Cardinal has hit 62 homers in 46 games. Sam Fuld leads the team in batting average (.376), hits (77), doubles (13) and at bats (205). Fuld has been on a tear of late, going 32-for-59 (.543) with seven straight multiple-hit games and 13 in his last 14 games. Ryan Garko has taken over the team lead in homers (11) while also pacing the club in runs scored (54) and bases on balls (28). Jason Cooper leads the team in slugging percentage (.671) and on-base percentage (.450). Carlos Quentin leads the team in RBI (45), triples (4) and hit-by-pitches (13). Brian Hall leads the club with 10 stolen bases in 10 attempts. Chris O'Riordan (.339), Quentin (.335), Andy Topham (.331), Scott Dragicevich (.331), Garko (.325) and Arik VanZandt (.315) are other regulars hitting above .300.
PITCHING REPORT
Stanford's ERA currently sits at 4.01 through its first 46 games, 0.51 higher than last year's final 3.50 mark. Stanford's regular starting rotation of Jeremy Guthrie (7-1, 2.90, 96.1 IP, 88 SO), Tim Cunningham (5-2, 4.34, 74.2 IP, 46 SO) and John Hudgins (8-0, 4.30, 73.1 IP, 50 SO) is a combined 20-3 with a 3.76 ERA. Hudgins leads the team in victories, while Guthrie paces the club in innings pitched and strikeouts. Hudgins and Guthrie co-lead the club with two complete games each, while Hudgins recorded his first career shutout and the team's only shutout at Oregon State (4/28). Guthrie has the team's longest performance of the year with a career-high 10.0 innings pitched at Arizona (4/5) in an eventual 18-inning 5-4 Stanford win. Ryan McCally (4-2, 3.16, 37.0 IP, 32 SO) has been the team's top reliever this year with six saves, ranking tied for second in the Pac-10. Darin Naatjes (4-0, 1.93, 2 SV, 18.2 IP, 22 SO) has also been emerging as one of the team's top pitchers. Others pitching primarily out of the bullpen include Dan Rich (1-1, 2.11, 2 SV, 21.1 IP, 25 SO), Jonny Dyer (2-0, 4.38, 12.1 IP, 8 SO), Drew Ehrlich (0-2, 4.54, 2 SV, 35.2 IP, 38 SO), David O'Hagan (0-0, 5.11, 12.1 IP, 8 SO), J.D. Willcox (2-1, 6.35, 11.1 IP, 3 SO) and Mark Jecmen (0-4, 8.20, 26.1 IP, 18 SO).
DEFENSIVE REPORT
Stanford's fielding percentage currently sits at .970, .007 percentage points below last year's .977 school record and nation's best mark. Stanford was errorless in the final two games of the California series (5/4 - 5/5) and has been errorless in seven of its last 15 games overall and a total of 16 games this year. Ryan Garko leads the club with 290 putouts, while Chris O'Riordan has a team-high 157 assists. The Cardinal has turned 54 double plays, including a season-high four at Fresno State (2/18). Arik VanZandt posted a team season-best 15 putouts at Arizona (4/6). O'Riordan had a team season-best 10 assists at Arizona (4/5).
STANFORD HEAD COACH MARK MARQUESS
One of the nation's premier collegiate coaches, Mark Marquess is in his 26th season at the helm of Stanford Baseball in 2002. Marquess has a career record of 1079-528-5 (.671), all at Stanford. Marquess coached his 1600th game at Stanford this season in a 19-2 win over Saint Mary's (4/16). Last year, he became the 23rd coach in the history of NCAA Division I baseball to reach the 1000-win mark with a 6-2 victory over Florida State in a game played on February 9, 2001. The 1969 Stanford graduate has led the Cardinal to two NCAA titles (1987, '88) and two other CWS title game appearances (2000, '01), as well as 11 College World Series appearances (1982, '83, '85, '87, '88, '90, '95, '97, '99, 2000, '01), 11 NCAA Regional titles (1982, '83, '85, '87, '88, '90, '95, '97, '99, 2000, '01), 10 Pac-10 or Pac-10 Southern Division regular season titles (1983, '84, '85, '87, '90, '94, '97, '98, '99, 2000) and three NCAA Super Regional championships (1999, 2000, '01). The Cardinal has qualified for the NCAA Tournament 19 times under Marquess. He began the 2002 season ranked 12th in victories and 16th in winning percentage among active Division I baseball coaches, while ranking 23rd on the all-time victory list and 42nd on the all-time winning percentage list. He has been named NCAA Coach of the Year three times (1985, '87, '88) and has received Pac-10 or Pac-10 Southern Division Coach of the Year honors on eight occasions (1983, '85, '87, '90, '94, '97, '98, '99). The Cardinal has posted winning seasons 25 times in 26 years under his leadership (includes this season) and has finished either first or second in the prestigious Pacific-10 (formerly Pac-10 Southern Division) 19 times in the last 21 years. Stanford has had 99 professional baseball draft picks in the past 17 seasons, including 12 first round selections in the last 15 years. A member of the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Marquess was the head coach of the 1988 United States Olympic baseball team that captured the gold medal. Marquess was also an accomplished football and baseball standout on The Farm and is a member of the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame. He is one of only six collegiate baseball head coaches to have both played and coached in the College World Series. Marquess was the starting first baseman and a First Team All-American on Stanford's 1967 College World Series squad and played four seasons of minor league baseball with the Chicago White Sox organization.

(on playing three of the final four Pac-10 series at home) "We hope that playing a bunch of home games over the final four weeks of the season will work in our favor. We've traditionally played well at home and hope to continue that in the next four weeks."
(on the balance in the Pac-10) "Anybody is capable of beating another Pac-10 team in a series. All the teams have enough talent to do that. The league is very unpredictable. The team that's going to win the league is one that can get a couple of sweeps and not get swept, but that will be difficult to do. I would be surprised if anybody ran away with the league title."
STANFORD COACHING STAFF
Dean Stotz is in his 26th campaign with Stanford Baseball and his third season as associate head coach after he was promoted to the position prior to the 2000 campaign. Stotz served for 23 years as an assistant. Stotz currently coaches third base while also handling various offensive and defensive aspects of the game. Tom Kunis (3rd season) handles the Cardinal pitching staff, while Dave Nakama (3rd season) returns as an assistant coach after three seasons as the head coach at San Francisco State. Nakama, also a Cardinal assistant in 1997 and 1998, assists with all aspects of the game and serves as Stanford's first base coach.
