May 9, 2002

Three Stanford Baseball players - Jason Cooper, Jeremy Guthrie and Chris O'Riordan - have been selected to the 2002 Men's University Division Verizon Academic All-District VIII Baseball team as selected by CoSIDA.

Cooper, a junior designated hitter from Moses Lake, Wash., has a 3.37 cumulative GPA majoring in Anthropological Science. He is hitting .374 with 10 homers and 43 RBI this season.

Guthrie, a junior pitcher from Ashland, Ore., has a 3.41 cumulative GPA majoring in Sociology. He has a 7-1 record and a 2.90 ERA with 88 strikeouts in 96.1 innings this year. Guthrie has also tossed a pair of complete games.

O'Riordan, a senior second baseman from San Diego, Calif., has a 3.47 GPA majoring in Political Science. He is hitting .339 with seven homers, 37 RBI and three stolen bases. O'Riordan has started 157 consecutive games at second base for the Cardinal.

Stanford was the only school with more than two student-athletes representing District VIII. The team is selected by voting among members of the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America in the district. Each member of the team will now represent the district - which is comprised of schools in Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and British Columbia - on the Verizon Academic All-America ballot.

To be eligible for consideration for the team a student-athlete must carry a GPA of 3.2 higher (on a 4.0 scale), must be in at least his second year of participation at the school and an important squad contributor.
