Stanford Advances To The Round Of 16

May 11, 2002

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford University posted its second shutout win in as many days with a 4-0 victory over Pepperdine University in the second round of the 2002 NCAA Women's Tennis Team Championships on Saturday afternoon at the Taube Tennis Center. The Cardinal, which beat Sacramento State 4-0 in the first round on Friday, improved to 23-1 with the win, while the Waves ended their season at 13-14.

Stanford will now remain at home for the final four rounds of the NCAA Team Championships, which will be held from Thursday-Sunday at the Taube Tennis Center. The second-ranked and third-seeded Cardinal will face 17th-ranked and 14th-seeded Kentucky (20-8) in the round of 16 on Thursday at a time to be announced. Along with the Cardinal and the Wildcats, six other teams clinched a trip to Stanford on Saturday - Florida, Tennessee, Duke, UCLA, California and Georgia.

Stanford jumped out to a good start by capturing both the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles matches to take a 1-0 advantage. Seniors Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, FL) and Gabriela Lastra (Reno, NV), who are ranked No. 1 in the nation, clinched the point with an 8-4 victory at No. 1.

The Cardinal wrapped up the shutout victory with three straight set wins over the Waves, who are ranked 36th and seeded No. 33-48.

Lastra rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles to get the Cardinal rolling, while senior Keiko Tokuda (Clifton, NJ) followed with a 6-0, 6-4 triumph at No. 5. Stanford then put the match away on freshman Erin Burdette's (Jackson, GA) 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4.

"I thought we played pretty well today," Stanford head coach Lele Forood said. "Pepperdine is a good team that has a lot of players who can put the ball away. We needed a match of this caliber to get us ready for next week."
