Pullman, Wa - Jillian Camarena, a rising star in track & field, defeated a quality field in the shot put to win the 2002 Pacific-10 title at the Conference Championships on Saturday at Washington State's Mooberry Field.
Camarena joined Erin Sullivan on the winner's stand for the Cardinal women. Sullivan captured the 10,000 meter title.
Camarena, who became Stanford's first Pac-10 champion in the shot put, saved her winning effort on her final throw. Camarena recorded an NCAA qualifying distance of 54-10 1/4 (16.72m), a career-best and second all-time in school history. Camarena's previous best was 53-10 1/4.
"I was kind of nervous on my last throw," said Camarena, who had entered the competition with the fourth-best mark in the Pac-10. "But I just told myself to relax and get off a good throw. I had a good week of practice."
Camarena defeated the Pac-10's top two throwers, UCLA's Jessica Cosby (finished second at 54-1) and WSU's Cynthia Ademiluti (finished third at 53-5 3/4).
Sullivan added to a day of success for the Cardinal women with a lengthy victory in the 10,000 meters. Sullivan, who was timed in 35:44.19, became the fourth Stanford athlete to win the conference title in the 10,000 meters since 1987, and the first Stanford winner since 1997 when Sarna Renfro won the league championship. Caroline Annis, who had led most of the race, finished second in a time of 36:01.74.
Stanford's victories in the shot put and 10,000 meters helped the women's team propel itself to first place after day one of the two-day competition. The Cardinal has scored 51 points compared to 41 for Oregon and 37 for Arizona State. Jonathon Riley ran to a Pac-10 championship in an event dominated in recent years by Stanford, the 10,000 meters. A Cardinal runner has won the conference crown in the 10,000 meters four of the last six years. Riley added to Stanford's success with a winning time of 30:22.64.
Milton Little became Stanford's first conference long jump champion since 1991 when he leaped 24-10. Little had entered the competition with the third best mark in the Pac-10.
"I wanted to be relax, and have some fun," said Little. "Everything has been coming along well in the last couple weeks."
Stanford collected 27 points in the 10,000 meters to help the Cardinal men to first place after one day of competition. The Cardinal has 58 points to lead Oregon by one point. Arizona is in third place with 44 points. Several Stanford athletes qualified for Sunday's final in their respective events. The list included Christine Moschella in the 400 meters, Nick Sebes and Evan Kelty in the 400 meters, Robyn Woolfolk in the 100 meter hurdles, Ashley Wysong and Maurica Carlucci in the 800 meters, and Mark Hassell and Gabe Jennings in the 800 meters.
Cardinal Chatter: Freshman Ian Dobson ran his first collegiate 3,000 meter steeplechase and his time of 9:03.06 is a frosh school record ... Dobson's time beat the old record of 9:03.59 by Jonathon Riley in 1998 ... Maurica Carlucci's time of 2:06.83 in the 800 meter qualifying is a career-best and and moves her into sixth place all-time at Stanford ... Freshman Nick Sebes' time of 47.41 in the 400 meter qualifying is seventh-best in school history.
