Stanford Men's Crew competed in the Pac-10 Conference Championship at Lake Natoma on Sunday. Racing with a second half surge, the Cardinal closed the gap on Oregon St. to 2.9 seconds. This push earned the Varsity 8 a second consecutive 4th place Pac-10 finish.
Coach Craig Amerkhanian was pleased with the team's performance against the strongest field in Championship history. Washington entered the regatta as the nation's top ranked team, followed by number 2 Cal and number 8 Oregon St.
The Stanford men started slowly in the afternoon final which took place in a driving rainstorm. As the race progressed, the strength of Cal and Washington separated the racing. Stanford and OSU were left with each other. Down by eight seats at the thousand, Stanford came to life. The margin closed to three seats before OSU secured third place, seven seats up. Cal earned its fifth consecutive championship with a come from behind victory over Washington. UW was up by as much as six seats and was still leading with 400 meters to go. The .9 second margin was the closet Varsity final in memory. The Stanford frosh finished fourth, 4.7 seconds behind Cal and 2 seconds behind OSU. Winner Washington was 10 seconds up on the field.
The Stanford 2V had a disappointing fifth place finish, losing to UC Davis for the first time this season. Cal defeated Washington and OSU handily to win the 2V. Next up for the Stanford men is the IRA National Championship, May 30-June 1 at Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
