Rancho Cordova, Calif. - The Stanford women's crew team had a tremendous showing at the Pac-10 regatta this weekend. On Saturday, the Open 4 and Open 8 kicked off the events by earning a silver medals.
Sunday morning the heats for the Pac-10 regatta went like clockwork with all teams advancing to the grand final. The varsity 4 avenged their loss to Washington State in the heat by coming from behind to finish a solid fourth, ahead of Washington State, in the final.
The second varsity also had a come from behind race, where they made a decisive move at the 1000m mark. At this point they continued to move on the field, overtaking California to earn the Bronze in the last 300 meters. This marks the highest finish ever by a Stanford 2V boat.
In the much anticipated women's varsity grand final the cardinal women took control in the first 1000 meters crossing the midway point in second place, just behind Washington. They fought off a hard charge by the University of Southern California as they pushed through the third 500 meters. Coming into the last 500 meters California and Washington State University made their final push and nipped Stanford at the line to finish second and third respectively. Stanford finished fourth- a mere 0.3 seconds behind Washington State and 0.9 sec. behind California.
The strength of the Cardinal women's team was solidified this weekend with an overall third place team points finish. The team awaits the announcement of the NCAA bids on Tuesday. This is the best team finish in the history of the Stanford Women's crew.
