Three Cardinal Netters Advance To Round Of 16 At NCAA Singles Championships

May 21, 2002

STANFORD, Calif. - Three Stanford women's tennis players advanced to the round of 16 on Tuesday afternoon at the 2002 NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championships at the Taube Tennis Center. Seniors Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, Fla.) and Gabriela Lastra (Reno, Nev.), along with freshman Erin Burdette (Jackson, Ga.), all won their first two matches of the day and were awarded All-America status as a result of qualifying for the round of 16.

Kalvaria, ranked No. 4 nationally and seeded eighth in the tournament, breezed past Georgia Tech's Jaime Wong 6-0, 6-3 in the first round before recording a 6-3, 6-1 victory over USC's Luana Magnani in the second. The Cardinal senior is scheduled face Kate Pinchbeck of North Carolina on Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Lastra checks in as one of eight No. 9-16 seeds in the tournament, as well as bringing in a No. 6 national singles ranking. The senior was impressive on Tuesday afternoon, notching two wins to advance to the round of 16. Lastra cruised past Debbie Larocque of Arizona 6-4, 6-1 in her first match and ousted Vladka Uhlirova of Texas 6-0, 6-2 in the following round. She is set to square off against Georgia's Agata Cioroch- the tourney's No. 5 seed- on Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Burdette also registered two wins in her first two matches of the singles championship. The freshman, ranked No. 13 in the country, posted straight-set wins over Tennessee's Alison Ojeda (6-2, 6-2) and North Carolina's Julie Rotondi (7-5, 6-2) to advance. Burdette will now match up with Florida's Lindsay Dawaf on Wednesday at 9 a.m.

"Overall, I thought I played pretty well," said Burdette. "In both matches today, each girl played good defense. I was able to stay on top of the ball and attack the net while they were at the baseline. All of my shots felt clean and sharp today."

Stanford's fourth entrant in the singles draw, sophomore Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, N.J.), failed to advance past the first round of competition. Barnikow dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Kentucky's Carolina Mayorga.
