Erin Burdette and Gabriela Lastra Advance In NCAA Singles And Doubles Action

May 22, 2002

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford women's tennis was once again well-represented on the second day of competition Wednesday at the 2002 NCAA Women's Tennis Championships at the Taube Tennis Center. Two Cardinal netters advanced to Thursday's quarterfinal round in singles, while both doubles teams picked up two wins to move on to the quarterfinals.

On the singles side, senior Gabriela Lastra (Reno, Nevada) and freshman Erin Burdette (Jackson, Ga.) registered victories in their respective round of 16 matches on Wednesday. No. 9-16 seed Lastra continued her current hot streak, notching her 22nd consecutive victory with a 6-0, 6-4 upset of No. 5 seed Agata Cioroch of Georgia. With the win over Cioroch on Wednesday afternoon, Lastra was able to avenge a 6-2, 6-0 defeat to Georgia's top player back on Feb. 9 at the National Team Indoors.

"I thought I came out very focused in today's match," said Lastra. "I've been watching her play lately and she's gone up against some good players in the tournament. I had played her at the Team Indoors earlier this season and she crushed me, so today I tried to take it one game at a time and everything else would take care of itself."

Lastra faces Vilmarie Castellvi of Tennessee on Thursday at 11 a.m. in the quarterfinals. The two met earlier this season in the title match of the National Collegiate Tennis Classic, with Castellvi collecting a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 victory.

Burdette also advanced to the quarterfinal round with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Florida's Lindsay Dawaf. The Cardinal freshman, ranked No. 13 in the nation and one of eight No. 9-16 seeds in the tournament, has won seven in a row since a 6-4, 6-7, 7-5 loss to Lastra at the Pac-10 Championships. Burdette, who has won 26 of her last 27 overall, will square off against Adria Engel of Arizona State on Thursday at 11 a.m. Burdette topped Engel 6-4, 6-4 on Apr. 26 at the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif.

Stanford's third entrant in the round of 16, senior Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, Fla.) was upset by North Carolina's Kate Pinchbeck 7-5, 6-3. Kalvaria, ranked No. 4 and seeded eighth in the singles draw, concludes her final collegiate season with a 23-7 overall mark.

In doubles action, Stanford's top duo of Kalvaria and Lastra was able to advance to the quarterfinals. Kalvaria and Lastra- the tournament's No. 1 seed- notched two three-set victories on Wednesday, defeating Washington State's Stacy McKenna and Erica Perkins 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the opening round and outlasting Fresno State's Simone Jardim and Kim Niggemeyer 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 in the second round. The senior tandem is now 31-3 on the season and will face Washignton's Claire Carter and Darija Klaic on Thursday.

The Cardinal's second doubles team of Burdette and sophomore Lauren Barnikow also chalked up two wins during the first two rounds of action. The unseeded tandem scored a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Oklahoma State's Linda Faltynkova and Katarzyna Kolodynska in the first round, then followed that with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 win over Manon Kruse and Stacy Varnell of Middle Tennessee State. Burdette and Barnikow will hook up with Kentucky's Carolina Mayorga and Sarah Witten tomorrow morning.

Quarterfinal round singles contests begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, with quarterfinal doubles competition scheduled to follow once singles is complete (approximately 1:30 p.m.).
