Ryan Haviland, David Martin Advance To The Third Round Of The NCAA Singles Championship

May 23, 2002

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Stanford juniors Ryan Haviland (Aiken, SC) and David Martin (Tulsa, OK) advanced to the third round of the NCAA Singles Championship on Thursday morning at Texas A&M University.

Haviland, who upset seventh-seeded Romain Ambert of Mississippi State on Wednesday, rolled over Auburn's Rameez Junaid 6-2, 6-2 in second round action. Haviland will face Travis Parrott of Portland in the round of 16 on Friday at 11:30 a.m. (PT).

Martin, meanwhile, went the distance to outlast Washington's Alex Vlaski. The Cardinal junior prevailed 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (2) to advance to the third round for the first time in his career. Martin, who is now 31-8 on the season, takes on fifth-seeded Al Garland of Pepperdine on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. (PT).

In doubles, Martin teamed with junior Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY) to record an impressive first round win. Lipsky and Martin, who are seeded second in the 32-team tournament, defeated Tennessee's Simon Rea and Mark Toledo 6-4, 6-4.

"We got off to a good start, but then (Tennessee) started serving better," Martin said. "And it threw our rhythm off a little bit. We didn't make it to the NCAA's as a team, so we're pressing a little bit as individuals and doubles. We want to let everyone know that we're still here."

Lipsky and Martin will face Markus Hornung and Nathan McGregor of Baylor in the second round on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. (PT).

"We still have two guys left in the singles," Lipsky said. "It's really tough not to be here as a team. So we're doing the best we can as individuals. Against Tennessee, we used our lobs and the wind to our advantage. We had to get a couple of matches under our belts to figure out what the wind was doing. We used our serves a lot as well."

Lipsky also competed in the second round of singles on Thursday morning, and was eliminated by fourth-seeded Jesse Witten of Kentucky 6-4, 7-6 (5). Lipsky finishes the season with a 31-13 singles mark.
