David Martin Reaches NCAA Singles And Doubles Quarterfinals

May 24, 2002

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Stanford junior David Martin (Tulsa, OK) advanced to the quarterfinals of both the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships on Friday at the Texas A&M Tennis Center. Martin and Oliver Maiberger of San Diego State are the only two players still alive in both the singles and doubles draws.

Martin is joined in the singles quarterfinals by junior teammate Ryan Haviland (Aiken, SC). In the doubles draw, Martin and junior Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY), who are the second seeds in the tournament, reached the quarterfinals with a three-set victory.

Martin, who is ranked 28th in the nation, pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the day with a decisive 6-3, 6-4 victory over fifth-seeded Al Garland of Pepperdine. The win helped Martin avenge a hard-fought three-set (2-6, 6-3, 6-4) loss to Garland on April 16 at Stanford.

"Coming into the match I knew I had nothing to lose," Martin said. "I was prepared to stay locked in and focus on making all of my shots. Al Garland likes to dictate from the baseline so it forced me to make an adjustment. I was just pleased that all my shots were falling. Everyone in this tournament is good so I'll just take it one match at a time."

Martin's victory set up an all-Bay Area quarterfinal against No. 9-16 seed John Paul Fruttero of California on Saturday at noon (Pacific Time).

Haviland, meanwhile, advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Travis Parrott of Portland. Haviland, who is now 29-10 on the season, will take on Brandon Wagner of Georgia in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. (PT).

In the doubles bracket, Lipsky and Martin survived a second round scare from Baylor's Markus Hornung and Nathan McGregor before prevailing 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-4. Lipsky and Martin, who reached the semifinals last year, will take on James Cameron and John Chesworth of Furman in quarterfinal action on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. (PT).
