Scott Lipsky/David Martin Advance To NCAA Doubles Final

May 26, 2002

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Stanford University juniors Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY) and David Martin (Tulsa, OK) will play for the 2002 NCAA Doubles Championship on Monday evening at Texas A&M University.

Lipsky and Martin, who are seeded second in the 32-team tournament, defeated Phllip King and Michael Yani of Duke 7-6 (6), 6-3 in Sunday evening's semifinals.

Lipsky and Martin, who reached the semifinals last season, are looking to become Stanford's first NCAA Doubles Champions since K.J. Hippensteel and Ryan Wolters in 1999. The Cardinal juniors will play Auburn's Andrew Colombo and Mark Kovacs in the final on Monday at approximately 4:00 p.m. (PT) at the Texas A&M Tennis Center.

In singles play, both Martin and junior Ryan Haviland (Aiken, SC) were eliminated in semifinal action on Sunday. Stanford was the only school to have two players reach the semifinals.

The unseeded Martin fell to defending NCAA Singles Champion and top-seeded Matias Boeker of Georgia 6-4, 6-4. Martin, who was making his second career appearance in the NCAA Singles Championship, finishes the season with an impressive 33-9 record.

Haviland, who entered the tournament as the 49th-ranked player in the nation, concluded his impressive run with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 loss to fourth-seeded Jesse Witten of Kentucky. Haviland, who was making his first career appearance in the NCAA Singles Championship, concluded his season at 30-11.
