Stanford, Calif. - Noor Dawood's dramatic goal at 75:31 lifted Stanford (1-0) to a 1-0 overtime victory over Ohio State (0-1) in the 2002 season-opener for both teams at the Varsity Field Hockey Turf on Saturday. Christina Williams assisted on the game-winner, while goalkeepers Emily Zander and Ana Kralovec combined for the shutout.
"The whole team contributed to this victory," said Dawood. "I was just in the right place at the right time on the goal. This win gives us a great direction for the rest of the season. The victory was really exciting."
"It's a great win for us," added Stanford head coach Sheryl Johnson. "To win an overtime game this early is a good confidence builder."
Ohio State held a 15-9 advantage in overall shots and led 15-4 in penalty corners. However, Stanford outshot the Buckeyes after halftime, 7-5.
Kralovec and Zander each recorded five saves in the net for the Cardinal, while Ohio State goalkeeper Lara Koole also had five saves.
Pacific (1-0) and Rutgers (0-1) also played at the Varsity Field Hockey Turf on Saturday with Pacific pulling out a 2-1 victory in penalty strokes. The Tigers made four of five penalty strokes and were declared the winner with Rutgers making only two-of-its first four. A conversion by Courtney Radonich on Pacific's fifth penalty stroke of the first round iced the victory.
Pacific had trailed 1-0 before sending the game into overtime on an unassisted goal by Alexandra Fiorina just before the end of regulation at 68:37. Rutgers scored early in the second half when Kamilah Lalani tallied on assists from Colleen Maniere and Megan Cech on a penalty corner at 38:39.
Neither team scored in two 15-minute seven-on-seven overtime periods to force the penalty stroke session.
Pacific goalkeeper Gina Sadler earned the victory with 14 saves, while Rutgers goalkeeper Stacey Gaenzle stopped five shots. Rutgers outshot Pacific, 22-8.
Stanford will next host Rutgers on Tuesday, September 3 (2 pm, PT). Pacific and Ohio State open a non-Stanford doubleheader Sunday, September 1 (2 pm, PT) on the Varsity Field Hockey Turf. California (0-0) and Rutgers will play the second game (4 pm, PT).
